BRONCOS MAINTAIN LEAD IN CCAA SOUTH DIVISION: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team won two of three games at UC San Diego last week to maintain its hold on the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division lead. The Broncos opened the series with a 6-3 victory on Friday. Taylor Wilding (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) tossed his sixth complete game of the season and allowed only six hits and three runs. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out 10. The Broncos had a 13-hit attack and scored five runs in the first three innings. Kevin Falls (So., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) had three hits and three RBI, while Anthony Esquer (Jr., Chino Hills, Whittier Christian HS) also had three hits and drove in a run. The Broncos took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jarrod Allen (Sr., Poway, San Diego Mesa College) and Falls had run-scoring singles. The Broncos scored three more times in the third inning. Jake Mendrin (Jr., La Habra Heights, Cal State Fullerton) belted a solo home run and Falls had a two-run single. Cal Poly Pomona scored its final run in the sixth inning when Esquer singled in a run. Cal Poly Pomona then split a doubleheader on Saturday against the Tritons. The Broncos managed only three hits in the opener and fell, 5-0. Mendrin had two hits, while Matt Lopez (Sr., Lancaster, Quartz Hill HS) had a triple for the only Bronco offense. John Cross (Jr., La Palma, Long Beach CC) allowed nine hits and four unearned runs in six innings. Stephen Payte (Jr., Lancaster, Lancaster HS) worked the final two innings and gave up two hits and one run. The Broncos got some outstanding relief work from Luis Carreras (Jr., San Dimas, Walnut HS) and a key two-run rally in the seventh inning to win the nightcap, 7-5. Carreras allowed five hits and only one earned run in five innings of relief. Matt Stevens (Sr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) singled to drive in Chris Janowicz (Jr., Arroyo Grande, Oregon State) to break a 5-5 tie. Mendrin followed with a sacrifice fly to boost the lead to two runs. Cal Poly Pomona took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a run-scoring double by Allen, who later scored on a wild pitch. After UC San Diego scored three times in the second inning, the Broncos responded with three runs in the third inning. Mendrin doubled in a run, Falls singled in a run and Evan Barnhart (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) delivered a run-scoring single. The Broncos had 13 hits in the game.
