BASEBALL: BRONCOS SETTLE FOR SPLIT WITH SAN FRANCISCO STATE

2005 Record: 21-15. 2005 CCAA Record: 17-9

BRONCOS SPLIT FOUR-GAME SERIES WITH GATORS: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team swept a doubleheader from San Francisco State on Saturday, but were swept by the Gators on Sunday. The split of the four-game series left the Broncos with a one-half game lead in the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division over UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos and Gators were originally supposed to start the series on Friday, but that game was rained out and the series was condensed into two days. Cal Poly Pomona got outstanding pitching from Taylor Wilding (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) and John Cross (Jr., La Palma, Long Beach CC) on Saturday and swept two games, 5-1 and 3-1. In the opener, Wilding allowed seven hits and one run in seven strong innings. He walked three and struck out 11 and improved his record to 7-2. John Lee (So., West Covina, Damien HS) allowed only one hit over the final two innings to earn his third save. The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a run-scoring single by Andy Gonzales (Sr., Whittier, California HS). After San Francisco State tied it with a run in the sixth inning, the Broncos took the lead for good with a two-run seventh inning. Gonzales reached on an error by the San Francisco State third baseman to drive in one run, while Matt Stevens (Sr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) singled in the other run. Cal Poly Pomona added two runs in the ninth inning. Stevens singled in one run and Jake Mendrin (Jr., La Habra Heights, Cal State Fullerton) doubled home Stevens. In the nightcap, Cross carried a shutout into the seventh inning and improved his record to 6-1. Matt Lusk (Jr., Bakersfield, Bakersfield JC) got the final out with the bases loaded to earn his second save of the season. Stevens had an infield single to drive in a run in the third inning, Anthony Esquer (Jr., Chino Hills, Whittier Christian HS) had a run-scoring single in the fourth inning and Kevin Falls (So., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. The Broncos did not have similar success on Sunday. Cal Poly Pomona fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and were down, 7-1 after five innings in the opener. The Broncos rallied and eventually took an 8-7 lead after a four-run rally in the eighth inning. Mendrin singled in two runs in the eighth to tie it and Chris Janowicz (Jr., Arroyo Grande, Oregon State) singled in another run to give the Broncos the lead. San Francisco State, though, got two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the game. In the nightcap, the Broncos rallied from a 2-0 deficit and took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Mendrin doubled in one run and Falls doubled in two more to put Cal Poly Pomona ahead. San Francisco State, though, scored two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to get the sweep. Mendrin had four hits and four RBI in the doubleheader to lead the Broncos.
