Broncos Will Host ITA Summer Tourney

Three-day tennis tournament will begin Saturday, July 24, at Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA ¾ Many of the top NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III tennis players in the country will be competing this summer at Cal Poly Pomona.

Week 3 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Collegiate Summer Circuit will be held at the Kellogg Tennis Complex beginning on Saturday, July 24. The first two rounds of singles competition will be held on Saturday, play will continue on Sunday, July 25 and championship matches will be held on Monday, July 26.

The tournament is part of a four-week summer circuit that is celebrating its 11th year. More than 15,000 men and women have competed in the tourneys since they began in 1993. The West Region circuit will begin at the Mission Viejo Country Club on July 10-12 and continue at Ventura College on July 17-20. Cal Poly Pomona will host the third tourney and the circuit will conclude at Pacific Palms Tennis Center on July 31-Aug. 3.

The players who receive the most points in the four tournaments will qualify for the ITA National Summer Championships at Indiana University on Aug. 14-18. Last year, a record 2,005 players competed in the summer circuit. This will be the seventh straight year Cal Poly Pomona has hosted one of the circuit’s stops.

“We’re very excited to be hosting this tournament once again,” Cal Poly Pomona Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach Sandy Kriezel said. “The summer circuit has become quite popular and we anticipate another outstanding tournament at Cal Poly Pomona.”

Kriezel, the 2003 NCAA Division II West Region Coach of the Year, and Andy Roland, who just completed his first year as a Cal Poly Pomona assistant coach, will be the tournament directors.

Several top Cal Poly Pomona players are expected to compete. Dehlia Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS), the Broncos’ No. 1 women’s singles player for the Broncos next season, will compete in the women’s draw. Feliz and Katrina Holmberg (Jr., Pukalani, Maui, HI, King Kekaulike HS) won the ITA Fall Regional doubles championships for the West Region last October. Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s team won the CCAA in 2003 and advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the second consecutive year in 2004. Andy Chang (Sr., Torrance, Cal State L.A.) and Alan Chang (Sr., Torrance, Cal State L.A.) from the Cal Poly Pomona men’s team are also expected to compete.
