BASEBALL: BRONCOS GET SWEPT BY SAN FRANCISCO STATE

2004 Record: 19-19-2. 2004 CCAA Record: 13-14-1

BRONCOS FALL OUT OF FOURTH PLACE IN CCAA RACE: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team dropped all four games to San Francisco State last week and will now have its work cut out to advance to the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament. The Broncos are now 1 ˝ games out of the fourth spot heading into a four-game series at Sonoma State. The Broncos dropped a pair of doubleheaders to San Francisco State, including back-to-back heartbreaking defeats on Friday. Cal Poly Pomona held a 10-5 lead entering the ninth inning in Game 1 on Friday, only to have San Francisco State rally for eight runs and a 13-10 victory. Then, in Game 2, after a two-run home run by Kenneth Galindo (Sr., Walnut, Mt. San Antonio College) tied the score at 3-3, the Gators scored a run in the top of the seventh to win, 4-3. In the series opener, the Broncos got some solid starting pitching from Jose Munoz (Sr., Baldwin Park, Rio Hondo JC) and a 16-hit attack, but it wasn’t enough. Galindo had a big game, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Kevin Falls (Fr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS), Evan Barnhart (So., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS), Jason Stuck (Sr., Chino, Citrus College), Matt Lopez (Jr., Lancaster, Quartz Hill HS) and Anthony Esquer (So., Chino Hills, Whittier Christian HS) had two hits each. A two-run single by Falls broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning and a three-run home run by Galindo in the eighth inning put the Broncos ahead, 10-5. San Francisco State, though, bunched together eight hits – all singles – and two walks in the ninth to pull out the victory. In the nightcap, Taylor Wilding (So., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) allowed only one earned run in a complete-game, seven-inning effort, but the Broncos managed only five hits. Galindo homered for the second straight game to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth, but the Gators got a two-out run in the seventh to win. On Saturday, the Broncos lost both games, 10-2 and 11-3. In the opener, the Gators scored six times in the third inning and four times in the sixth. John Lee (So., West Covina, Damien HS), Chad Burleson (Sr., La Habra, Fullerton JC) and James Valicenti (Fr., Huntington Beach, Marina HS) blanked the Gators on one hit over the final three innings. Esquer had two hits and scored a run for the Broncos, while Galindo and Lopez had RBI. In the nightcap, the Broncos had a 2-1 lead five innings behind the pitching of Luis Carreras (So., San Dimas, Walnut HS). Carreras, though, tired in the sixth and the Gators struck for five runs, mostly against the Bronco bullpen. San Francisco State added five runs in the seventh to put the game away. Galindo capped an impressive series with two more hits and two more RBI, giving him eight RBI for the series.

BRONCOS PLAY WELL IN EXHIBITION LOSS TO QUAKES: For the second straight season, Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team played the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at the Epicenter and the Broncos fell, 2-0, in a well-played game Wednesday night in front of nearly 1,500 fans. Kenny McCarthy (Sr., Moreno Valley, Riverside CC) had a pair of hits for the Broncos, while pitchers Kyle Todd (Fr., Anaheim, Magnolia HS), Mike Foskett (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Rancho Cucamonga HS), Brian Weiner (Sr., Westwood, Beverly Hills HS), Chad Burleson (Sr., La Habra, Fullerton JC), James Valicenti (Fr., Huntington Beach, Marina HS), Efren Lira (Sr., Walnut, Mt. San Antonio College), Russell Smith (So., Brawley, Brawley HS) and Jeremey White (Sr., Palmdale, Riverside CC) did a nice job of holding down the Quakes’ offense.

BRONCOS TO HIT THE ROAD AGAINST SONOMA STATE: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team will travel to Rohnert Park this week for an important California Collegiate Athletic Association series against third-place Sonoma State, which has won nine straight games. The Broncos are 13-14-1 in the CCAA and are 1 ˝ games out of the fourth and final spot for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
