Broncos Finish 2003 Season On A
Winning Note: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s volleyball team, after a weekend
sweep of Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills, concluded its 2003
season with an overall record of 19-11. The Broncos were also 14-8 in the CCAA
and finished in sole possession of fourth place. Coupled with a 20-11 record in
2002, the Broncos have won 39 matches over the last two seasons, which equals
the best two-year win total since the 1993 and 1994 seasons. Those teams also
won 39 matches in two years. Cal Poly Pomona came within one victory of
recording back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since the 1992 and
1993 seasons. The Broncos have now won 18 or more matches in four of the last
five seasons. Cal Poly Pomona came up short in its quest for a first NCAA
Division II playoff berth since 1997 when pairings were announced on Sunday.
The field included UC San Diego, Western Washington,
Cal State San
Bernardino, Cal State Bakersfield, Hawaii Pacific and Seattle
University.
About Last Week: The Broncos completed their season
with wins at Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills last week. Cal Poly
Pomona started the week with a 30-22, 33-31, 24-30, 30-28 win over Cal State
L.A. The victory gave the Broncos their first season sweep over the Golden
Eagles since 1996. Kimberly Van Beek (Sr., Artesia, Whitney HS) had a sensational match, recording a team-high
21 kills. Van Beek also delivered match point for the
Broncos with a tip to end Game 4. She also had six blocks and two aces. Allison
Anderson (So., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) had 18 kills and four blocks, while
Lindsay Fischer (Sr., Alta Loma, Alta Loma HS) 16 kills, 19 digs and five
blocks. Kellie Francis (So., Chino,
Don Lugo HS) had eight kills and two blocks. Emily
Kennedy (So., Upland, Upland HS) had 54 assists, eight digs and two blocks. The
Broncos then concluded their season with a 30-19, 30-27, 26-30, 30-27 win over
Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. Van Beek had
another outstanding match with a team-high 18 kills and one block. Fischer had
16 kills and a team-high 17 digs and Anderson
had 14 kills, eight digs and six blocks. Breezie
Jordan (So., Ventura, Buena HS) had 13 digs. Elizabeth Defoort
(So., Glendora, Citrus College)
had seven kills and one block.
Rankings: Cal Poly Pomona
received votes for three consecutive weeks earlier in the season, but did
not receive votes in the most recent national rankings released by the AVCA on
Tuesday. UC San Diego is still the No. 1 team in the nation, while Cal State
San Bernardino is fourth. With Western Washington checking
in at second, the Pacific Region has the top two and three of the top four
teams in the country.
How About That Schedule: Cal Poly Pomona once again
faced a very challenging schedule in 2003. When the Broncos defeated Cal State
San Bernardino on Oct. 1, it marked the second time in five days that Cal Poly
Pomona hosted the No. 1 team in the country. UC San Diego was also ranked No. 1
on Sept. 26 when the Tritons knocked off the Broncos in four games. The Broncos
faced three teams – Chaminade (HI), Findlay
(Ohio) and Florida
Southern – in the Cal Poly Pomona Invitational that received votes in the AVCA preseason
National Top 25. Findlay received
votes in the latest national poll and had a 29-7 regular-season record. Cal
Poly Pomona recorded one win over Cal State San Bernardino and two wins over
Cal State L.A., which went into the final week ranked seventh in the region.
On The Bench: Rosie Wegrich,
who holds the Cal Poly Pomona standard for most wins by a head coach, completed
her 12th year with the program. Wegrich
has compiled a 549-407-10 record in 28 years as a head coach and is one of the
most successful Division II coaches in the nation. Before coming to Cal Poly
Pomona, Wegrich coached at Division I programs at Minnesota
and Arizona. She has a 220-148
mark (.598) at Cal Poly Pomona and picked up her 200th win as Bronco
head coach last season in a thrilling five-game victory over Cal State L.A. on
Nov. 15, 2002. Wegrich also picked up her 500th
career win when the Broncos posted a four-game win over Grand Canyon
in the final match of the 2000 season.
When We Meet Again: The Broncos will return several
of their top players, although three seniors will graduate off the 2003 team. Allison
Anderson (So., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) led the team in
kills with 442, which is ninth on the all-time single-season list. She also led
the team in blocks with 110. Kellie Francis (So., Chino,
Don Lugo HS) was fourth on the team in kills with 180
despite missing several matches with injury. Elizabeth Defoort
(So., Glendora, Citrus College)
was fifth on the team in kills with 167. The Broncos also got solid first
seasons from Casey Riedel (Fr., Saugus,
Saugus HS), who was sixth in kills with 109 and Emma Kariotis
(Fr., Long Beach, Long Beach Poly
HS). Emily Kennedy (So., Upland,
Upland HS) led the team in assists with 1,395, which is the second-highest
single-season total in the program’s history. After two seasons, Kennedy is
already third on the career assist list with 2,646. The Broncos also have Breezie Jordan (So., Ventura,
Buena HS), who was second on the team in digs with 241 coming back.
An Impressive Second Season: Allison Anderson (So.,
Chino Hills, Ayala HS) was the Broncos’ top offensive
threat in 2003. Anderson opened the
season with a strong showing in the Cal Poly Pomona Invitational. She recorded
58 kills and 14 blocks in the Broncos’ first four matches and was named the
tournament Co-Most Valuable Player. Anderson
followed that up with 71 kills and 23 blocks in the Western Oregon Tournament. She
set a new career high when she recorded 27 kills in a five-game loss to
Northwest Nazarene. She also had a career high in block assists in the tourney,
posting 11 in a four-game loss to Western Oregon. Anderson
had 19 kills in the Broncos’ five-game win over No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino
on Oct. 1. She recorded 24 kills, including the match-winner, in a five-game
victory at Chico State
on Oct. 18 and she had 21 kills in a four-game match against Cal State
Bakersfield on Oct. 25. She had 20 kills in the Broncos’ three-game sweep over San
Francisco State on
Nov. 7. Anderson’s single-match high
in 2002 was 12 kills. She reached double figures in kills in 27 of the Broncos’
first 30 matches after hitting double figures in four matches all last season.
She led the team with 442 kills, which is the ninth-highest single-season total
in the program’s history. She also led the team in blocks with 110.
Leading With Lindsay: Lindsay Fischer (Sr., Alta
Loma, Alta Loma HS) concluded her fine Cal Poly Pomona
career in impressive fashion, recording 32 kills in wins over Cal State L.A.
and Cal State Dominguez Hills last weekend. She finished the season third on
the team in kills with 315. She also led the squad in digs with 299. In 2002, Fischer became the first Cal Poly
Pomona player since 1998 to earn All-Pacific Region recognition. She received
honorable mention. Fischer recorded 450 kills and 368 digs in 2002 and led the
team in both categories. Even more important for the Broncos: she stayed
healthy. In 2001, Fischer suffered a season-ending injury in the fourth match
of the year and the Broncos struggled to a 10-20 mark. With Fischer back in
2002, the Broncos went 20-11. Fischer finishes her career in third place on Cal
Poly Pomona’s career kill list with a total of 1,274. Cathy Bell is the
all-time leader with 1,556 and Ellen Migasi is second
with 1,336.
A Hit On And Off The Court: One of Cal Poly Pomona’s
top players, Kimberly Van Beek (Sr., Artesia, Whitney
HS), has also been one of the Broncos’ top students. Van Beek
completed her Cal Poly Pomona career in style, recording 338 kills and 82
blocks. She finished second on the team in both categories. She recorded a
career-high 24 kills in the Broncos’ four-game win over UC Davis on Sept. 13
and had 41 kills in Cal Poly Pomona’s wins over Chico
State and the Aggies.
She also had a team-high 21 kills in the Broncos’ win over Cal State L.A. on
Friday. Van Beek posted 20 kills in the Broncos’
five-game win at Chico State
on Oct. 18 and she had a team-high 18 kills in the Broncos’ five-game loss at Cal
State Bakersfield on Sept. 19. She also finishes her career high in several Cal
Poly Pomona career offensive categories. She is fourth in kills with 1,116,
fourth in service aces with 138 and fifth in blocks with 346. Van Beek excels in the classroom as well. The psychology major
earned first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America
District VIII honors last week and is now eligible for All-America honors. The
national team will be announced later this month. She also made the second-team
All-District team last season and carries a sparkling 3.8 grade point average.
She is a member of the university’s President’s Honor List and the Dean’s List.
Thanks For The Assist: Emily Kennedy (So., Upland,
Upland HS) has put together sensational back-to-back seasons to begin her Cal
Poly Pomona career. Kennedy, who recorded 1,251 assists
last season, improved on that total and finished with 1,395 this season. Her
total was the second-best single-season mark in the history of the program. The
program record was set by Terri Dantuma in 1985 with
1,497. After two years, Kennedy is already third on Cal Poly Pomona’s career
list with 2,646. Trang Nguyen leads with 4,013 and
Casey Gregg is second with 3,178. Kennedy set a new career high with 70 assists
against Northwest Nazarene in the Western Oregon Tournament. Kennedy had 210
assists in the four matches in Oregon.
Kennedy also had 62 assists in the Broncos’ five-game win at Chico
State on Oct. 18 and she had 54 in
the four-game win over Cal State L.A. on Friday. She also had 50 blocks this
season, which was fourth on the team and she led the squad with 38 service
aces.
The Leaders Of The Stats: Allison Anderson (So., Chino Hills, Ayala
HS) led the Broncos in kills with 442, while Kimberly Van Beek
(Sr., Artesia, Whitney HS) was second with 356 and Lindsay Fischer (Sr., Alta
Loma, Alta Loma HS) was third with 315. Anderson
also led in blocks with 110, while Van Beek had 83
and Fischer had 62. Emily Kennedy (So., Upland,
Upland HS) led the team with 1,395 assists and 38
service aces. Fischer led the Broncos in digs with 299, while Breezie Jordan (So., Ventura,
Buena HS) had 241.
