Broncos Cling To Postseason Hopes After Disappointing
Loss: After falling out of the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s
South Division race, Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer team must win its final two
conference games and hope for some help in order to reach the four-team CCAA
Championship Tournament. Cal Poly Pomona will be at Grand Canyon
this Saturday night and will conclude the regular season with a home contest
against Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Nov. 1. The Broncos are tied for
second in the South Division with the Coyotes and are four points behind Cal
State Bakersfield, which currently has the best second-place record in the
conference. The Roadrunners have three matches remaining.
Last Week: The Broncos lost a heartbreaking 2-1
decision to CCAA South Division leader UC San Diego in La Jolla
on Saturday in a game that was decided by penalty kicks. The Tritons scored
both of their goals on penalty kicks to pick up the victory. Cal Poly Pomona
took a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute when Stephen Lopez (Fr., Saugus,
Saugus HS) scored his third goal of the season. Joe DeVito
(Jr., Walnut Creek, De La Salle HS) sent in a cross that Jonathan Bornstein
(So., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos
HS) got over to Lopez, who found the back of the net. The assist by Bornstein was
his team-high 12th of the season. He is now just one assist shy of
the single-season record of 13. UC San Diego was awarded its first penalty kick
just 22 seconds after the Broncos had scored their goal and the Tritons got
another one in the 77th minute. The Broncos were already playing a
man short at the time. Gabriel Ward (Jr., Chino Hills, Damien
HS) made four saves in goal for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona held a 14-10
advantage in shots.
Scouting the Opposition: The Broncos are 7-15-1 all-time against Grand
Canyon and beat the Antelopes, 3-1, on Sept. 9 at Kellogg Field.
Cal Poly Pomona got goals by Robert Cardenas (Jr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio
College), Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS) and Daniel Siapin
(Jr., La Habra Heights, Sonora HS). Tim Sisk (So., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) made six saves for the Broncos. Cal Poly
Pomona has won the last three meetings between the two programs.
Rankings: Cal Poly Pomona
has slipped out of the NSCAA
regional rankings.
About The Coach: One of the most recognizable names
in United States
soccer history, Paul Caligiuri is in his second year
as Cal Poly Pomona’s head coach. In his first season, he guided the Broncos to
an 8-9-1 record, which was a
huge improvement from the 3-15-1
mark in 2001. He has a 14-17-3 overall record with the Broncos. Caligiuri is a former member of the Los Angeles Galaxy and
United States National Team. One of the most memorable moments of his playing
career came in 1990 when he scored the game-winning goal – known as the “Goal
Heard Round The World” – against Trinidad & Tobago that qualified the U.S.
for its first World Cup appearance in 40 years. Caligiuri
made 110 game appearances for the United States National Team.
Look Who’s Back: Just about
everybody, actually. Cal Poly Pomona has eight starters and 17 players in all
returning from last year’s team. Leading the list of returners
is Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS), who was the CCAA Freshman of the Year last
season. Bornstein led the Broncos with 10 goals and seven assists and earned
first-team All-CCAA and second-team All-West Region honors. Robert
Cardenas (Jr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College), a second-team All-CCAA
selection last season, also returns. Two other starters who were among
the team’s leading scorers, Geoff Bachanas (Sr., San
Jose, Archbishop Mitty HS) and Andrew Pierce (So.,
Oswego, N.Y., Oswego HS) are also back. Bachanas had
four goals and one assist last season, while Pierce had three goals and three
assists.
Look Who’s New: Cal Poly
Pomona is extremely excited about its recruiting class and several newcomers
are expected to make immediate impacts. Andrew Bornstein (Jr., Los Alamitos, Long Beach CC), the older brother of Jonathan
Bornstein, was expected to be one of the top newcomers and he paid immediate
dividends, scoring the game-winning goal in the Broncos’ 2-1 win over Western
Washington on Aug. 31. Daniel Sussman (Fr., Mission
Viejo, Capistrano Valley HS), Sean Cima
(Fr., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos
HS) and Jason Ward (Fr., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS) have all contributed during the season and redshirt freshman Stephen Lopez (Fr., Saugus,
Saugus HS) has scored three goals, two in a 3-1 win over San
Francisco State on
Oct. 5 and the other in the 2-1 loss at UC San Diego last Saturday.
Bornstein Is Leading The Charge: Sensational Jonathan
Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los
Alamitos HS) is leading the Broncos in scoring for a
second straight season and making a strong case for California Collegiate
Athletic Association Player of the Year consideration. Bornstein leads the
Broncos with six goals and 12 assists for 24 total points. He has tied Cal Poly
Pomona’s single-game assist record of three twice this season, most recently
when he helped on all three goals in a 3-1 Bronco win over San
Francisco State on
Oct. 5. Bornstein also scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over defending NCAA
Division II champ Sonoma State
on Oct. 3. He was named the CCAA Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 29 –
Oct. 5 for his performances against Sonoma
State and San
Francisco State. Bornstein
also set a new program record by taking 13 shots in the Broncos’ contest
against Cal State Stanislaus on Sept. 26. He had the game-winning goal on a
penalty kick against Grand Canyon on Sept. 9 and he had
the opening goal in a 2-1 win over Western Washington in a game decided on a
goal by Andrew Bornstein (Jr., Los Alamitos, Long
Beach CC), Jonathan’s older brother, in the final minute of the game. His 12
assists are one shy of the program’s single-season record of 13 set by Scott
McGuire in 1984.
From New York, With Skills: The Broncos are getting
big production from their lone out-of-state player, Andrew Pierce (So., Oswego,
N.Y., Oswego HS).
Pierce is second on the team in scoring with five goals and two assists for 12
points. Pierce has scored four goals in the Broncos’ last nine games, including
both Cal Poly Pomona goals in a 3-2 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills. It was the first two-goal game of Pierce’s college career. Pierce finished tied for second in
scoring last year with nine points on three goals and three assists.
The Leaders Of The
Stats: Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los
Alamitos HS), who led the team in scoring a year ago,
is leading the Broncos in scoring again this year. Bornstein has six goals and
12 assists for 24 points. Bornstein tied a program record for most assists in a
game with three in the Broncos’ 3-0 win over Cal State L.A. on Sept. 19 and again
last Sunday in a 3-1 win over San Francisco State. He also set a new program
record for shots in a game with 13 against Cal State Stanislaus on Sept. 26.
Bornstein’s six goals lead the team, while Andrew Pierce (So., Oswego,
N.Y., Oswego HS)
is second with five goals. Bornstein leads the team with 12 assists, which is
just one shy of the program’s single-season assist record. Robert Cardenas
(Jr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College) is second
on the squad with three assists. Tim Sisk (So., Diamond Bar, Diamond
Bar HS) has played a team-high 1,127 minutes in goal. He has given up 25 goals
and has a goals against average of 2.00. He has made
52 saves and has a save percentage of .675. He is 6-6 and has one shutout,
against Sonoma State,
on Oct. 3. He also combined with Jeff Coombs (So., Palm
Springs, Palm Springs HS) for a shutout against Cal State L.A.
