MEN’S SOCCER
MEDIA NOTES
2003 CPP Record: 4-5-2. CCAA Record: 3-3-1 (10 points)
Broncos Prepare To Host Defending NCAA Champs: After
playing one of the CCAA’s traditional powers to a tie
in its last game, the Cal Poly Pomona men’s soccer team gets ready to entertain
the defending NCAA Division II champions this weekend. The Broncos will host Sonoma
State, which captured the 2002 NCAA
Division II championship, on Friday at 7 p.m.
in the first of two home games this weekend. Cal Poly Pomona will also host San
Francisco State on Sunday at 3 p.m. Cal Poly Pomona is currently winless in its
last three matches, but is coming off a well-deserved 1-1 tie against perennial
power Cal State Bakersfield last Sunday. Sonoma
State brings a 5-5-0 overall record and a 3-2-0 conference mark into Friday’s contest. San
Francisco State is
3-8-0 overall and 1-4-0 in conference play. After
Sunday’s game against San Francisco State,
the Broncos will only have one more home game this season.
Last Week: The Broncos were stunned by Cal State
Stanislaus, 6-3, on Friday to begin their weekend. The Warriors were winless in
their first five conference contests, but exploded for a season-high in goals
against the Broncos. Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos,
Los Alamitos HS) set a new
program record by firing off 13 shots in the game. The old record was 10 set by
John Picco against Grand Canyon
on Oct. 23, 2000 and the
Broncos had a 25-8 edge in shots. The Broncos took a 1-0 lead just 5:37 into the match when Robert Cardenas (Jr.,
Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College) drilled a ball
right off a pass from Andrew Pierce (So., Oswego,
N.Y., Oswego HS) from about 35 yards out
and into the Cal State Stanislaus goal. After two Warrior goals, Geoff Bachanas (Sr., San Jose,
Archibishop Mitty HS) tied it up with his first goal of the season in
the 40th minute. Bornstein scored the final Bronco goal with an
assist from Pierce just 36 seconds into the second half. That tied the score at
3-3, but the Warriors got the final three goals of the contest. Cal Poly Pomona
returned to action on Sunday and settled for a 1-1 tie with Cal State
Bakersfield. The game was scoreless at halftime even though the Broncos outshot the Roadrunners, 9-1, in the first 45 minutes of
play. The Broncos took a 1-0 lead when Bornstein scored on a penalty kick in
the 59th minute after Cardenas
was fouled in the box. Cal State Bakersfield then turned up the pressure and
finally got the tying goal with 1:10
left in regulation.
Scouting the Opposition: The Broncos are 6-4-0 all-time against Sonoma
State, including a 4-2 win last
year in Sonoma that was one of only
three losses by the Seawolves all last season. The Seawolves are currently third in the CCAA North Divisoin with 10 points (3-2-0). Cal Poly Pomona is 6-3-2 all-time against San
Francisco State
and defeated the Gators, 1-0, last season in San Francisco,
on a goal by Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS).
Rankings: Cal Poly Pomona
does not appear in NSCAA national or regional rankings this week. Sonoma
State is ranked eighth in the NSCAA
Far West Region rankings.
About The Coach: One of the most recognizable names
in United States
soccer history, Paul Caligiuri is in his second year
as Cal Poly Pomona’s head coach. In his first season, he guided the Broncos to
an 8-9-1 record, which was a
huge improvement from the 3-15-1
mark in 2001. He has an 12-14-3 overall record with the Broncos. Caligiuri is a former member of the Los Angeles Galaxy and
United States National Team. One of the most memorable moments of his playing
career came in 1990 when he scored the game-winning goal – known as the “Goal
Heard Round The World” – against Trinidad & Tobago that qualified the U.S.
for its first World Cup appearance in 40 years. Caligiuri
made 110 game appearances for the United States National Team.
Look Who’s Back: Just about
everybody, actually. Cal Poly Pomona has eight starters and 17 players in all
returning from last year’s team. Leading the list of returners
is Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS), who was the CCAA Freshman of the Year last
season. Bornstein led the Broncos with 10 goals and seven assists and earned
first-team All-CCAA and second-team All-West Region honors. Robert
Cardenas (Jr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College), a second-team All-CCAA
selection last season, also returns. Two other starters who were among
the team’s leading scorers, Geoff Bachanas (Sr., San
Jose, Archbishop Mitty HS) and Andrew Pierce (So.,
Oswego, N.Y., Oswego HS) are also back. Bachanas had
four goals and one assist last season, while Pierce had three goals and three
assists.
Look Who’s New: Cal Poly Pomona
is extremely excited about its recruiting class and several newcomers are
expected to make immediate impacts. Andrew Bornstein (Jr., Los Alamitos, Long Beach CC), the older brother of Jonathan
Bornstein, was expected to be one of the top newcomers and he paid immediate
dividends. Andrew Bornstein scored the game-winning goal in the Broncos’ 2-1
win over Western Washington on Aug. 31. Daniel Sussman (Fr., Mission Viejo,
Capistrano Valley HS), Sean Cima (Fr., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS) and
Jason Ward (Fr., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS) are all expected to contribute to the team
this season.
The Broncos’ Bornstein Brothers: The Broncos are
expecting big things this season from not one Bornstein, but two. Jonathan
Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los
Alamitos HS) earned first-team All-CCAA and
second-team All-West Region honors last year and was named the conference
Freshman of the Year. He scored 10 goals and had seven assists and was the
team’s leading scorer. He is a legitimate Player of the Year candidate in the
CCAA this season. He set a new program record for most shots in a game with 13
in a 6-3 loss against Cal State Stanislaus and he tied a team record with three
assists in the Broncos’ 3-0 win over Cal State L.A. on Sept. 19. He leads the
team with five goals and seven assists and 17 points. He scored the opening
goal in the Broncos’ 2-1 win over Western Washington on
Aug. 31. His older brother, Andrew Bornstein (Jr., Los Alamitos,
Long Beach CC) had the game-winning goal against the
Vikings with 45 seconds remaining in regulation. Jonathan Bornstein had the
game-winning goal on a penalty kick in a 3-1 win over Grand Canyon,
while Andrew Bornstein had the assist on Darren Ross’ game-winning goal against
UC San Diego. Andrew Bornstein comes to Cal Poly Pomona after playing two
seasons with Long Beach City
College, where he earned
All-Conference honors as a sophomore.
From New York, With Skills: The Broncos are getting
big production from their lone out-of-state player, Andrew Pierce (So., Oswego,
N.Y., Oswego HS).
Pierce is second on the team in scoring with four goals and two assists for 10
points. Pierce has scored three goals in the Broncos’ last four games,
including both Cal Poly Pomona goals in a 3-2 loss at Cal State Dominguez
Hills. It was the first two-goal game of
Pierce’s college career. Pierce finished tied for
second in scoring last year with nine points on three goals and three assists.
The Leaders Of The
Stats: Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los
Alamitos HS), who led the team in scoring a year ago,
is leading the Broncos in scoring again this year. Bornstein has five goals and
seven assists for 17 points. Bornstein tied a program record for most assists
in a game with three in the Broncos’ 3-0 win over Cal State L.A. on Sept. 19
and he set a new program mark for shots in a game with 13 against Cal State
Stanislaus on Sept. 26. Bornstein’s five goals lead the team, while Andrew
Pierce (So., Oswego, N.Y.,
Oswego HS) is second with four goals. Bornstein leads
the team with seven assists. Robert Cardenas (Jr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College) is second on the squad with three
assists. Tim Sisk (So., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS)
has played a team-high 787 minutes in goal. He has given up 15 goals and has a goals against average of 1.71. He has made 35 saves and
has a save percentage of .700. He is 4-4 and has combined with Jeff Coombs
(So., Palm Springs, Palm Springs HS) for one shutout.
