MEN’S SOCCER
MEDIA NOTES
2003 CPP Record: 7-8-2. CCAA Record: 6-6-1 (19 points)
Broncos Keep CCAA Tournament Hopes Alive: Cal Poly
Pomona’s men’s soccer team picked up a much-needed win last week and still
retains CCAA Championship Tournament hopes, although the Broncos must defeat
Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday at Kellogg Field in their regular-season
finale and then get some help. The Broncos are just one point behind the
Central Division’s Cal State Bakersfield in the race for the wildcard, but have
played one fewer game than the Roadrunners. The Broncos are three points ahead
of Cal State San Bernardino, although the Coyotes have played two fewer games.
Cal State San Bernardino will be at Grand Canyon
Wednesday, while Cal State Bakersfield hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills on
Wednesday. The Coyotes still have a game pending with UC San Diego that was
postponed because of the raging fires in the Inland Empire
and will need to be rescheduled. Cal State Bakersfield will conclude its
regular season on Saturday at Cal State Stanislaus.
Last Week: The Broncos snapped a three-game losing
streak with a clutch 1-0 victory over Grand Canyon last Saturday in Phoenix,
AZ. A first-half goal by Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos,
Los Alamitos HS) in the 40th
minute was the lone score of the game. The Broncos owned an 11-5 edge in shots
and Tim Sisk (So., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) only
needed to make one save to post his second shutout of the season. Robert
Cardenas (Jr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College) got the game-winning play
started with a pass to Jason Ward (Fr., Los Alamitos,
Los Alamitos HS). Ward sent in a centering pass that Bornsatein got to and punched into the net. It was
Bornstein’s team-high seventh goal of the season and his third game-winning
goal.
A Salute To The Seniors: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s soccer program
will honor its three seniors on Saturday in pregame
ceremonies. Luis Orellana (Sr., Montebello, Belmont
HS), Geoff Bachanas (Sr., San
Jose, Archbishop Mitty HS)
and Tony Fiandaca (Sr., Chino, Chino HS) will play
for the final time at Kellogg Field on Saturday against Cal State San
Bernardino.
Scouting the Opposition: The Broncos are 12-14-5 all-time against Cal State
San Bernardino and lost to the Coyotes, 2-0, on Sept. 16 in San
Bernardino. The Coyotes got goals from Barry Steele
and Nick Hadjiconstantis, both in the second half.
Tim Sisk (So., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) made four
saves, while Cal State San Bernardino goalie Joe Kulm
made four saves. The Broncos were 0-1-1 against the Coyotes last season, losing
in San Bernardino, 6-4, and tying
0-0 at Kellogg Field.
Rankings: Cal Poly Pomona
has slipped out of the NSCAA
regional rankings.
About The Coach: One of the most recognizable names
in United States
soccer history, Paul Caligiuri is in his second year
as Cal Poly Pomona’s head coach. In his first season, he guided the Broncos to
an 8-9-1 record, which was a
huge improvement from the 3-15-1
mark in 2001. He has a 15-17-3 overall record with the Broncos. Caligiuri is a former member of the Los Angeles Galaxy and
United States National Team. One of the most memorable moments of his playing
career came in 1990 when he scored the game-winning goal – known as the “Goal
Heard Round The World” – against Trinidad & Tobago that qualified the U.S.
for its first World Cup appearance in 40 years. Caligiuri
made 110 game appearances for the United States National Team.
Look Who’s Back: Just about
everybody, actually. Cal Poly Pomona has eight starters and 17 players in all
returning from last year’s team. Leading the list of returners
is Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS), who was the CCAA Freshman of the Year last
season. Bornstein led the Broncos with 10 goals and seven assists and earned
first-team All-CCAA and second-team All-West Region honors. Robert
Cardenas (Jr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College), a second-team All-CCAA
selection last season, also returns. Two other starters who were among
the team’s leading scorers, Geoff Bachanas (Sr., San
Jose, Archbishop Mitty HS) and Andrew Pierce (So.,
Oswego, N.Y., Oswego HS), are also back. Bachanas had
four goals and one assist last season, while Pierce had three goals and three
assists.
Look Who’s New: Cal Poly
Pomona is extremely excited about its recruiting class and several newcomers
are expected to make immediate impacts. Andrew Bornstein (Jr., Los Alamitos, Long Beach CC), the older brother of Jonathan
Bornstein, was expected to be one of the top newcomers and he paid immediate
dividends, scoring the game-winning goal in the Broncos’ 2-1 win over Western
Washington on Aug. 31. Daniel Sussman (Fr., Mission
Viejo, Capistrano Valley HS), Sean Cima
(Fr., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos
HS) and Jason Ward (Fr., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS) have all contributed during the season and redshirt freshman Stephen Lopez (Fr., Saugus,
Saugus HS) has scored three goals, two in a 3-1 win over San
Francisco State on
Oct. 5 and the other in the 2-1 loss at UC San Diego on Oct. 18.
Bornstein Is Leading The Charge: Sensational Jonathan
Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los
Alamitos HS) is leading the Broncos in scoring for a
second straight season and making a strong case for California Collegiate
Athletic Association Player of the Year consideration. Bornstein leads the
Broncos with seven goals and 12 assists for 26 total points. He has tied Cal
Poly Pomona’s single-game assist record of three twice this season, most
recently when he helped on all three goals in a 3-1 Bronco win over San
Francisco State on
Oct. 5. Bornstein also scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over defending NCAA
Division II champ Sonoma State
on Oct. 3 and he had the lone goal in a 1-0 win at Grand Canyon
last Saturday. He was named the CCAA Player of the Week for the week of Sept.
29 – Oct. 5 for his performances against Sonoma
State and San
Francisco State. Bornstein
also set a new program record by taking 13 shots in the Broncos’ contest
against Cal State Stanislaus on Sept. 26. He had the game-winning goal on a
penalty kick against Grand Canyon on Sept. 9 and he had
the opening goal in a 2-1 win over Western Washington in a game decided on a
goal by Andrew Bornstein (Jr., Los Alamitos, Long
Beach CC), Jonathan’s older brother, in the final minute of the game. His 12
assists are one shy of the program’s single-season record of 13 set by Scott
McGuire in 1984.
From New York, With Skills: The Broncos are getting big
production from their lone out-of-state player, Andrew Pierce (So., Oswego,
N.Y., Oswego HS).
Pierce is second on the team in scoring with five goals and two assists for 12
points. Pierce has scored four goals in the Broncos’ last 10 games, including both
Cal Poly Pomona goals in a 3-2 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills. It was the first two-goal game of Pierce’s college career. Pierce finished tied for second in
scoring last year with nine points on three goals and three assists.
The Leaders Of The Stats:
Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS), who led the team in scoring a year ago, is
leading the Broncos in scoring again this year. Bornstein has seven goals and
12 assists for 26 points. Bornstein tied a program record for most assists in a
game with three in the Broncos’ 3-0 win over Cal State L.A. on Sept. 19 and again
Oct. 5 in a 3-1 win over San Francisco
State. He also set a new program
record for shots in a game with 13 against Cal State Stanislaus on Sept. 26.
Bornstein’s seven goals lead the team, while Andrew Pierce (So., Oswego,
N.Y., Oswego HS)
is second with five goals. Bornstein leads the team with 12 assists, which is
just one shy of the program’s single-season assist record. Robert Cardenas
(Jr., Chino Hills, Mt. San Antonio College) is second
on the squad with four assists. Tim Sisk (So., Diamond Bar, Diamond
Bar HS) has played a team-high 1,217 minutes in goal. He has given up 25 goals
and has a goals against average of 1.85. He has made
53 saves and has a save percentage of .679. He is 7-6 and has two shutouts,
against Sonoma State,
on Oct. 3 and last Saturday against Grand Canyon. He
also combined with Jeff Coombs (So., Palm Springs,
Palm Springs HS) for a shutout against Cal State L.A.
