Three-day tennis tournament will begin Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona
POMONA ¾ Many of the top NCAA
Division I and Division II tennis players in the country will be competing this
weekend at Cal Poly Pomona.
Week 3 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Collegiate
Summer Circuit will be held at the Kellogg Tennis Complex beginning on Saturday
morning. The first two rounds of singles competition will be held on Saturday,
play will continue on Sunday and championship matches will be held on Monday.
The tournament is part of a four-week summer circuit that is
celebrating its 10th year. More than 13,000 men and women have
competed in the tourneys since they began in 1993. The West Region circuit
began at the Mission Viejo Country Club in early July and continued last
weekend at Ventura. Cal Poly Pomona will host this weekend and the circuit
concludes at Pacific Palms in Industry Hills next week.
The players who receive the most points in the four tournaments
will qualify for the ITA National Summer Championships at Indiana University on
Aug. 9-13.
“We’re very excited to be hosting this tournament,” Cal Poly
Pomona Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach Sandy Kriezel said. “It’s mostly
Division I players who come home for the summer. We have representation from
all over the United States.”
Kriezel, the 2003 NCAA Division II West Region Coach of the
Year, and Andy Roland, who completed his collegiate tennis career at Cal Poly
Pomona this past spring, are the tournament director this weekend.
Several top Cal Poly Pomona players are expected to compete.
Dehlia Feliz (Jr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS), who is expected to be the No.
1 women’s singles player for the Broncos next season, will compete in the
women’s draw, while Tristin Edwards (So., Rancho Cucamonga, Rancho Cucamonga
HS) and David Nguyen (Sr., Los Angeles, Beverly Hills HS) are entered in the
men’s bracket. Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s team won the CCAA in 2003 and advanced
to the second round of the NCAA playoffs.
Kevin McQuaid of Santa Clara and Judith DeVera of USC are the
top seeds this weekend.
A complete draw is posted on the Cal Poly Pomona athletic web
