Weekly Honors
Cal Poly Pomona honored for an outstanding week of competition
WALNUT CREEK -- Three Cal Poly Pomona
student-athletes were honored by the California Collegiate Athletic Association
for their performances from Sept. 29 – Oct. 5.
Kellie
Francis (So., Chino, Don
Lugo HS) was named the Molten CCAA Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week,
Jonathan Bornstein (So., Los Alamitos, Los Alamitos HS) was named the Brine CCAA Men’s Soccer Player
of the Week and Michelle McConnell (Sr., Alta Loma, Alta Loma HS) was named the
Brine CCAA Women’s Soccer Player of the Week.
Francis
led the Broncos to a 2-1 week in volleyball, including a five-game win over No.
1 ranked Cal State San Bernardino last Wednesday. Francis scored the Broncos’
final three points of the match in a 26-30, 30-28, 30-20, 17-30, 15-11 win, the first for Cal Poly Pomona over Cal State San Bernardino
since 1997. Francis had 14 kills, five blocks and two digs. She then tied a
career-high with 19 kills in a five-game loss at Sonoma State on Friday and finished with
a team-high 13 kills in a three-game sweep at San Francisco State. Cal Poly Pomona is
currently 11-6 overall and 6-3 in the CCAA.
Bornstein
led the Cal Poly Pomona men’s soccer team to a 2-0 week and had a part in all
four Bronco goals in a 1-0 victory over Sonoma State and a 3-1 win over San Francisco State. Bornstein scored the lone
goal in the win over Sonoma State and then tied a Cal Poly
Pomona single-game record with three assists in the win over San Francisco State. Bornstein, a first-team
All-CCAA forward last year, leads the Broncos with six goals and 10 assists and
22 points. The Broncos have climbed back into a first-place tie with UC San
Diego in the CCAA’s South Division.
McConnell
led the Cal Poly Pomona women’s soccer team to 3-2 victories over Sonoma State and San Francisco State. She had an assist and
scored what proved to be the game-winning goal against Sonoma State on Friday on a penalty
kick. She added two assists on Sunday to help rally the Broncos from a late 2-1
deficit against San Francisco State. The Broncos are currently
third in the South Division, but just two points behind second-place Cal State
San Bernardino.
Also
during the week, Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team was ranked second in
the nation by Street & Smith’s and Dehlia Feliz (Jr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) and
Katrina Holmberg (So., Pukalani, Maui, HI, King
Kekaulike HS) won the ITA West Regional Women’s
Doubles title.
