DOUBLEHEADERS WITH HPU: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team won three out of
five games during a busy week of non-conference competition. The Broncos
started the week with a 10-0 win over NAIA school Cal Baptist in Riverside
and then split a pair of doubleheaders at Scolinos
Field against Hawaii Pacific. Cal Poly Pomona got shutout pitching from five
players in the win over Cal Baptist on Wednesday. Jesse Coffman (Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Chaffey College)
got the Broncos off and running with a leadoff home run against the Lancers.
Coffman, Marc Evans (Fr., Alta Loma,

two RBI each for the Broncos. Kenneth
Galindo (Sr., Walnut, Mt. San Antonio College) had
two hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Chase

Pacific in a two-day, four-game series on Friday and Saturday. Game 1 of the
series went to the Broncos, 10-3. Efren Lira (Sr.,

the game open with a five-run third inning that was highlighted by a two-run
triple by Allen. Galindo and Kenny

also had a run-scoring double in the fourth inning for the Broncos. Hawaii
Pacific rebounded to win the nightcap, 3-2, on a solo home run leading off the
seventh inning. Jose Mesa (Sr., Baldwin
Park, Rio Hondo JC) went 5
1/3 innings and gave up only six hits and two runs. Cal Poly Pomona managed
only four hits in the game and McCarthy had the only RBI with a sacrifice fly

scored once in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Falls,
but couldn’t get the tying run. The Broncos got a solid pitching performance
from Carreras in the nightcap to salvage the split, 6-2. Carreras allowed seven
hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings and then got some outstanding relief from Mike Foskett
(Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Rancho Cucamonga HS), who got
