BASEBALL: BRONCOS WIN THREE, LOSE TWO IN BUSY WEEK

BRONCOS SPLIT PAIR OF DOUBLEHEADERS WITH HPU: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team won three out of five games during a busy week of non-conference competition. The Broncos started the week with a 10-0 win over NAIA school Cal Baptist in Riverside and then split a pair of doubleheaders at Scolinos Field against Hawaii Pacific. Cal Poly Pomona got shutout pitching from five players in the win over Cal Baptist on Wednesday. Jesse Coffman (Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Chaffey College) got the Broncos off and running with a leadoff home run against the Lancers. Coffman, Marc Evans (Fr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) and Anthony Esquer (So., Chino Hills, Whittier Christian HS) had two RBI each for the Broncos. Kenneth Galindo (Sr., Walnut, Mt. San Antonio College) had two hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Chase Stroupe (So., San Clemente, San Clemente HS) went the first 2 1/3 innings for the Broncos and allowed only one hit. John Lee (Fr., West Covina, Damien HS) followed with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only one hit and picking up the win. Taylor Wilding (So., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS), Joseph Talley (Fr., Glendora, Damien HS) and Luis Carreras (So., San Dimas, Walnut HS) followed with one scoreless inning of relief each. The Broncos then hosted Hawaii Pacific in a two-day, four-game series on Friday and Saturday. Game 1 of the series went to the Broncos, 10-3. Efren Lira (Sr., Walnut, Mt. San Antonio College) allowed eight hits and three runs in five innings and picked up his third win of the season. Jeremey White (Sr., Palmdale, Riverside CC) gave up only one hit in two innings to complete the victory. Jarrod Allen (Jr., Poway, San Diego Mesa CC) had a pair of hits and three RBI, while Matt Stevens (Jr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) had two hits and two RBI. The Broncos broke the game open with a five-run third inning that was highlighted by a two-run triple by Allen. Galindo and Kenny McCarthy (Sr., Moreno Valley, Riverside CC) followed with run-scoring singles. Allen also had a run-scoring double in the fourth inning for the Broncos. Hawaii Pacific rebounded to win the nightcap, 3-2, on a solo home run leading off the seventh inning. Jose Mesa (Sr., Baldwin Park, Rio Hondo JC) went 5 1/3 innings and gave up only six hits and two runs. Cal Poly Pomona managed only four hits in the game and McCarthy had the only RBI with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. The Broncos then dropped the opener of a doubleheader on Saturday, 7-6. Cal Poly Pomona fell behind, 7-1, in the top of the third inning and a comeback bid fell short. Allen had a solo home run in the second inning and Kevin Falls (Fr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) had a two-run home run in the third inning for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona scored once in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Falls, but couldn’t get the tying run. The Broncos got a solid pitching performance from Carreras in the nightcap to salvage the split, 6-2. Carreras allowed seven hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings and then got some outstanding relief from Mike Foskett (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Rancho Cucamonga HS), who got the last four outs of the game. Allen homered for the second game in a row, belting a towering two-run shot in the first inning. Stevens had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI and McCarthy had a pair of hits.

 

BRONCOS TO RESUME CONFERENCE PLAY IN ARIZONA: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team, which is off to a 12-7-1 start in California Collegiate Athletic Association action, will resume conference play this week with a four-game series at Grand Canyon beginning on Friday. The Broncos and Antelopes will play a single game on Friday night at 7 p.m. to open the series, which will include a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.

 

BRONCOS TO FACE QUAKES ON APRIL 7: For the second straight season, Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team will face the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. The Broncos will meet the Quakes on Wednesday, April 7, in a 7:15 p.m. contest at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga. The Quakes are a Class A team in the Anaheim Angels’ organization. MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TENNIS: BRONCO WOMEN SPLIT CONFERENCE MATCHES

WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAM BEATS GATORS, FALLS TO ANTELOPES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team posted an exciting 5-4 victory over San Francisco State last Monday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. The match was decided at No. 2 singles, where Katrina Holmberg (So., Pukalani, Maui, HI) outlasted her San Francisco State opponent, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Holmberg also teamed with Dehlia Feliz (Jr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) for a win at No. 1 doubles, 9-8. The Broncos lost two of the three doubles contests, but won four of six singles matches. Feliz won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, Renee Paquillo (Fr., Fullerton, Rosary HS) won at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2 and Jennie Burggraf (Sr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) won at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4. The Broncos then traveled to Arizona for a match with Grand Canyon on Sunday and lost, 7-2. Burggraf won her match at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 4-6 (10-8) and Feliz and Holmberg won at No. 1 doubles, 8-1.

 

BRONCO WOMEN TO HOST UC DAVIS, XENIA ANASTASIADOU TOURNAMENT: Cal Poly Pomona will host the 2004 Xenia Anastasiadou Memorial Tournament beginning on Friday, April 2, at the Kellogg Tennis Complex. The Broncos will face Hawaii Hilo on Friday at 10 a.m. to open the action. Cal Poly Pomona will face Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 10 a.m. and an opponent to be determined on Sunday. Cal Poly Pomona, Hawaii Hilo, Azusa Pacific, the University of North Colorado, Grand Canyon and Cal State Bakersfield are the six teams entered in the tourney.

 

BRONCO MEN TO HOST DIVISION I IDAHO ON SATURDAY: The Cal Poly Pomona men’s tennis team will return to action with a home match against the University of Idaho at the Kellogg Tennis Complex on Saturday, April 3, at 11 a.m.

 

M/W TRACK AND FIELD: BRONCOS WIN DUAL MEET AGAINST MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE

 

CAL POLY POMONA GETS TOP MARKS IN SATURDAY MEET: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s track and field teams squared off with Middlebury College in dual meets Saturday at Pomona Pitzer. The Bronco men prevailed, 114-65, while the women won a tight meet, 85-82. Adam Moore (Fr., Moorpark, Moorpark HS) recorded a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II championships with a time of 53.39 in the 400 meter hurdles. The Broncos also got a sensational performance in the 1500 meters from Brad Fessenden (Jr., Hacienda Heights, HH Wilson HS), who recorded a lifetime best of 3:56.96. That time was within three seconds of the provisional qualifying standard. Daryll Eaton (Fr., Hacienda Heights, Don Bosco HS) recorded a season best of 22.02 while winning the 200 meters, DeAndre Laurie (Jr., Pomona, Diamond Ranch HS) had his best mark of the season while winning the high jump with a leap of 6-8. Laurie also won the triple jump. Matt Palmer (So., Glendora, Glendora HS) had his best mark of the year while winning the discus with a throw of 146-3. and Jeff Holder (Sr., Diamond Bar, Citrus College) had his best hammer throw of the year while winning in 161-02. The men’s 4x100 relay team also had its best performance of the year with a time of 41.58. The team consisted of Jason Johnson (Jr., San Dimas, Citrus College), Vince Nguyen (Jr., Santa Ana, Fountain Valley HS), Eaton and Tim Gregory (So., Valencia, Hart HS). For the women, Cathy Everett (Fr., Fontana, Henry J. Kaiser HS) had her best time while winning the 400 in 60.40 and Carolyn Brown (Fr., Burbank, John Burroughs HS) had a season-best 2:19.91 while winning the 800. Natalie Miano (So., Rowland Heights, Nogales HS) had a time of 4:59.34 in the 1,500, Rachel Schaffner (Fr., Livermore, Moreau Catholic HS) won the high jump with a leap of 5-4 ¼.

ALLEN EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS: Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball star Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario, University of Arizona) was named to the 2004 NCAA Division II Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America team. Allen led the NCAA Division II in scoring with a 24.5 points per game average. She earned the 36th All-America honor in the program’s history and became the 16th Kodak All-American. Allen becomes the fourth Cal Poly Pomona player in the past five years to earn mention on the prestigious Kodak team. Lauri McIntosh was the Division II Player of the Year in 2002 and also earned mention in 2000. April Powell was named in 2001. Allen led the Broncos to a 23-7 overall record and a spot in the NCAA Division II West Region championship game for the third time in the past four years. She was named along with Keila Beachem (Sr., Chicago, Ill., University of Kansas) to the West Regional All-Tournament team.

 

TICKETS ON SALE FOR THIS SATURDAY’S GREEN AND GOLD DINNER: The 32nd annual Green and Gold Dinner will be held on April 3, 2004 at the Sheraton Suites Fairplex in Pomona. A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the dinner scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dinner tickets are on sale and so are the drawing tickets with a $5,000 grand prize. ANNUAL FUND-RAISING DRIVE CONTINUES: Cal Poly Pomona Athletics is encouraging its supporters to contribute to its annual fundraising drive, which raises money specifically for scholarships. As students face challenging economic times ahead, the Athletic Department wants to respond by making more scholarships available to them.
