DEFENDING WEST REGION
CHAMPS FALL TO HUMBOLDT STATE: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball
team completed one of the best seasons in the program’s history with a
first-round NCAA Division II West Region playoff loss to eventual regional
champion Humboldt State,
86-83, on Friday, March 12. The Broncos, who won the regional championship in
2003, qualified for the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time in
the program’s history and also achieved 20-win seasons in consecutive years for
the first time ever. The Broncos made one of their patented rallies against No.
3 seed Humboldt State,
coming back from 13 points down in the last 12 minutes, only to fall just short
at the end. Jeff Bonds (Jr.,
Compton, Mayfair HS) had 26 points and seven rebounds
to lead the Broncos, while Jonathan Boyd
(So., Fontana, Etiwanda HS) had a
career-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers. David Sybesma (Jr., Corona,
Corona Centennial HS) had 16 points, eight rebounds
and nine assists, while Jonathan
Williams (Sr., Pasadena, John
Muir HS) had 16 points, three rebounds and three assists. The Broncos only
committed seven turnovers in an extremely well-played game. Humboldt
State shot 57 percent for the game
and made an amazing 15 of their 20 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. Even
so, the Broncos whittled away at the deficit and got it down to one point,
84-83, after 3-pointers by Williams and Bonds. After two Humboldt
State free throws, Sybesma tried a 3-pointer that would have sent the game
into overtime, but it just missed at the buzzer.
BRONCOS HAUL IN
POSTSEASON HONORS: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team placed three
players on the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association teams, including
a pair on the first team for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Jeff Bonds
(Jr., Compton, Mayfair HS) earned first-team honors for
the second straight season, while David Sybesma (Jr., Corona,
Corona Centennial HS) earned first-team recognition for the first time. Sybesma was on the All-CCAA second team as a sophomore.
Also, Jonathan Williams (Sr., Pasadena,
John Muir HS) was named to the second team for the
second straight year. The All-CCAA teams are voted on by the conference
coaches. Bonds received an additional honor when he was named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-West Region second team in
voting done by sports information directors in the region. It’s the first
All-Region honor for Bonds, who led the Broncos in scoring (17.3) and
rebounding (6.0).

BRONCOS RUN ENDS WITH
LOSS TO UNBEATEN FALCONS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team concluded
a fantastic season by reaching the NCAA Division II West Regional final, where
the Broncos were beaten by undefeated Seattle Pacific, 80-63, last Monday. The
Broncos advanced to the championship game with victories over Chico
State and Cal State Bakersfield and
were making their third appearance in a regional title game in the past four
years. Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario,
University of Arizona)
and Keila Beachem
(Sr., Chicago, Ill.,
University
of Kansas) were both named to the
All-Tournament team. The Broncos opened the playoffs with a tough first-round
win over No. 6 seed Chico State, 74-70. The Broncos scored the first eight
points of the game and were ahead for most of the contest, but the Wildcats
made things interesting in the second half. The Broncos led by nine points,
58-49, with nine minutes left, but Chico State sliced the deficit to three
points, 71-68, with 21 seconds remaining and could have gotten even closer, but
missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Two free throws by Beachem
and another by Allen put the game away. Allen had 30 points and six assists and
knocked down five 3-pointers. Beachem had 10 points
and 17 rebounds, while Shanika Perkins (So., Oakland,
Oakland HS) had 10 points, six rebounds, three assists
and four steals. Tami Swanson-Cades
(Sr., Nevada City,
Sierra College)
had seven assists. Cal Poly Pomona thenh rallied from
13 points down in the second half and upended No. 2 seed Cal State Bakersfield,
87-84, in the second round. The Broncos trailed, 63-50, with 10 minutes left,
but steadily chipped away at the deficit, finally grabbing the lead at 81-80 on
a layup by Brandi
Fletcher (So., Pomona, Diamond
Ranch HS) with 40 seconds to go. That was one of five lead changes down the
stretch, the final one coming when Allen hit two free throws with five seconds
remaining to give the Broncos an 85-84 advantage. After a Cal State Bakersfield
turnover, two more free throws by Allen accounted for the final margin. Beachem had season highs in points (28) and rebounds (20),
while Allen finished with 26 points. Fletcher had 11 points and Jaida Williams (Sr., Opalocka, Fla.,
Barry University)
had nine points and 10 rebounds. The Broncos enjoyed a 44-37 rebounding edge.
Both teams were outstanding at the free throws line, Cal State Bakersfield
hitting 34 of 37 attempts and Cal Poly Pomona making 31 of 34. The Broncos then
ran into No. 1 Seattle Pacific in the championship game and fell to the
hot-shooting Falcons, 80-63. Seattle Pacific hit 12 of its 20 attempts from
behind the 3-point arc and shot 47 percent overall. The Broncos made just 33
percent of their shots, including just 1-of-8 from 3-point range. Marisa Lattin
(Sr., Oceanside, El
Camino HS) concluded her fine Cal Poly Pomona career with a sensational game,
pouring in 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Allen had 16 points, while Beachem had seven points and 11 rebounds.
BRONCOS WELL
REPRESENTED ON ALL-CCAA, ALL-REGION TEAMS: Cal Poly Pomona’s Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario, University
of Arizona), the leading scorer in the NCAA Division II, was named the
California Collegiate Athletic Association’s Player of the Year in voting done
by the conference coaches. Allen led the nation in scoring with 24.5 points per
game. She was joined on the All-CCAA first team by Keila Beachem (Sr., Chicago,
Ill., University of Kansas).
Allen was also named to a pair of All-Region teams. She was named to the Daktronics All-West Region team in voting done by the
sports information directors and she was also named to the WBCA All-West Region
team in voting done by women’s basketball coaches. She is now eligible for
All-America honors, which will be announced later this week. Allen set a new Cal
Poly Pomona record for scoring average in a season and for most points scored
in a season (734), which elipsed the old mark of 692
by Lauri McIntosh.
BASEBALL: BRONCOS WIN THREE OF FOUR FROM TOROS
2004 Record: 15-10-2. 2004 CCAA Record: 12-7-1
BRONCOS REMAIN IN
CHASE FOR CCAA LEAD: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team won three out of four
games against Cal State Dominguez Hills and remain very much in the hunt for
the California Collegiate Athletic Association lead. UC Davis is in first
place, but is not eligible for the conference title because of its impending
move to Division I. Among teams eligible for the conference title, the Broncos
are second, just behind Cal State San Bernardino and just ahead of Cal State
L.A. The Broncos got a well-pitched game from Efren Lira (Sr., Walnut, Mt. San Antonio
College) to beat the Toros, 4-2, in the series opener
in Carson on March 11. Lira went
eight innings and only gave up two runs while striking out seven. The Broncos
broke a 2-2 tie with a single run in the seventh inning. Chase Stroupe (So., San Clemente, San Clemente HS)
doubled and scored on a one-out double by Kevin
Falls (Fr., Chino Hills, Ayala HS). Kenneth
Galindo (Sr., Walnut, Mt. San Antonio College) had
three hits and scored twice for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona then pounded out a
season high 23 hits and rolled past the Toros, 18-5,
on March 12. The 18 runs were a season high as well. Matt Lopez (Jr., Lancaster, Quartz Hills
HS) led the rampage with a pair of home runs. Lopez had five hits in the game,
drove in six and scored three times. Matt
Stevens (Jr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) had four hits and
drove in three runs, while Evan Barnhart
(So., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) scored three times and drove in three runs. Caleb Allen (So., Poway,
Poway HS) also had three hits, while Stroupe, Falls and Jarrod
Allen (Jr., Poway, San Diego Mesa CC) had two hits
each. Jose Munoz (Sr., Baldwin
Park, Rio Hondo JC) allowed
only two hits over six scoreless innings to pick up his fifth win of the
season. The Broncos then split a doubleheader at Scolinos
Field to conclude the series. The Toros won the
opener, 7-6, with two runs in the top of the ninth inning. Galindo had three
hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Broncos, while Falls
had two hits and drove in a run. The Broncos had 11 hits in the game and took a
brief 6-5 lead in the eighth inning when Galindo singled in Kenny McCarthy (Sr., Moreno
Valley, Riverside
CC) to break a 5-5 tie. The Broncos bounced back to take the nightcap, 6-2,
behind a strong pitching performance by Chris
Sotro (Sr., Upland,
Upland HS). Sotro gave up only five hits and one
earned run over 6 2/3 innings. Mike Foskett (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga,
Rancho Cucamonga HS) got the final out for the Broncos. Jason Stuck (Sr., Chino, Citrus College) had three hits and drove
in two runs to lead the Bronco attack, while McCarthy added a two-run double.
Caleb Allen and Stevens also drove in runs for the Broncos.
