DEFENDING WEST REGION
CHAMPS SET NEW PROGRAM MARK: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team
completed one of the best regular seasons in the program’s history by sweeping
Grand Canyon and UC San Diego on Friday and Saturday in Kellogg Gym. The wins
pushed the Broncos’ conference record to 17-5, which set a new record for most
California Collegiate Athletic Association victories. The old mark was 16 set
last year. Cal Poly Pomona finished third in the CCAA and also clinched
back-to-back 20-win seasons and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA playoffs
for the first time ever. The Broncos scored the first 21 points of the game and
rolled past Grand Canyon, 77-58, Friday, to open the weekend. Jeff Bonds (Jr., Compton, Mayfair HS) led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points and
eight rebounds. David Sybesma (Jr., Corona,
Corona Centennial HS) had 14 points, six rebounds and
six assists and Jonathan Boyd (So., Fontana,
Etiwanda HS) had 14 points. The Broncos got a much tougher test on Saturday
night before subduing UC San Diego, 71-66. Bonds led the Broncos with 24 points
and five assists, while Sybesma had a double-double
with 15 points and a career-high 10 assists. Boyd and Hervey Malone II (So., Pittsburg,
Pittsburg HS) finished with eight points each. Cal
Poly Pomona honored Jonathan Williams
(Sr., Pasadena, John
Muir HS), Guy Beahm
(Sr., Willow Glen, West Valley JC) and Michael
Ridgway (Sr., Houston,
TX, Lamar
University) in pregame
ceremonies as part of Senior Night. The Broncos led by six points at halftime,
34-28, and led by 16 points, 51-35, with 14:25
to go. UC San Diego, though, steadily chipped away and cut the gap to two
points five times, the final time at 68-66 with 47 seconds to go. Cal Poly
Pomona then patiently ran its offense until Boyd hit a clutch 3-pointer from
the corner with one second remaining on the shot clock and 13 ticks left in the
game.
BRONCOS WILL FACE HUMBOLDT STATE IN FIRST-ROUND GAME: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team, the

BRONCOS RUN WIN STREAK
TO EIGHT WITH CCAA VICTORIES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team
finished its regular season on a roll, running its current win streak to eight
with victories over Grand Canyon and UC San Diego this
past weekend in Kellogg Gym. The Broncos finished second in the California
Collegiate Athletic Association and will return to the NCAA Division II
playoffs after a one-year absence. The Broncos, who already knew they’d be in
the regional, defeated two teams that were fighting for playoff spots. Cal Poly
Pomona defeated Grand Canyon, 85-57, Friday night, avenging a loss earlier in
the season to the Antelopes. Candice
Allen (Sr., Ontario, University
of Arizona), the leading scorer in
NCAA Division II, led four Broncos in double figures with 22 points. Brandi Fletcher (So., Pomona,
Diamond Ranch HS) had 21 points and nine rebounds in
17 minutes for the Broncos, while Keila Beachem (Sr., Chicago, Ill.,
University of Kansas)
had 13 points and Jaida Williams (Sr., Opalocka, Fla.,
Barry University)
had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed a 41-24 advantage on the
boards and also forced 28 Grand Canyon turnovers. The
Broncos led by nine points, 38-29, at halftime and had its lead immediately cut
to seven early in the second half. Cal Poly Pomona then embarked on an 11-0 run
and broke the game wide open. The Broncos led by as many as 33 points. The
Broncos then defeated UC San Diego, 69-59, on Saturday night, completing a
season sweep of the Tritons. Cal Poly Pomona had five players score in double
figures, led by Beachem with 13 points and nine
rebounds. Williams had 12 points, Tami
Swanson-Cades (Sr., Nevada City,
Sierra College)
had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Fletcher had 10 points. Allen finished with
10 points. The Broncos owned a 48-39 rebounding edge. The game was tied at
halftime, 33-33, and the Broncos fell behind by five points, 38-33, early in
the second half. Cal Poly Pomona took the lead for good on a basket by Fletcher
with 14:19 remaining that started an 11-0 run that gave the Broncos control of
the game. The Broncos honored Allen, Beachem,
Williams, Swanson-Cades and Marisa Lattin (Sr., Oceanside,
El Camino HS) in pregame ceremonies as part of Senior
Night.
BRONCOS TO FACE CHICO STATE IN OPENING PLAYOFF GAME: Cal Poly
Pomona’s women’s basketball team, which has won two NCAA Division II championships
in the past three years, will return to the postseason after a one-year
absence. The Broncos, the No. 3 seed, will face No. 6 seed Chico
State in a first-round game Friday
at 12:30 p.m. at Seattle Pacific.
The winner of that game will face the winner of the game between No. 2 Cal
State Bakersfield and No. 7 Grand Canyon on Saturday at 5 p.m. The championship
game will be held on Monday at 7 p.m.
Cal Poly Pomona is tied with North Dakota
State for most national titles (5)
and NCAA playoff wins (46). The Broncos will be making their 19th
postseason appearance, which is second only to Bentley
College among all Division II
schools.
BASEBALL: BRONCOS USE TRICKERY TO SALVAGE FINALE
AGAINST CSLA
2004 Record: 12-9-2. 2004 CCAA Record: 9-6-1
BRONCOS SCORE LATE TO
DEFEAT GOLDEN EAGLES: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team salvaged the finale
of a four-game series against Cal State L.A. on Saturday thanks to a little bit
of trickery. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh
inning of a game tied at 4-4, Head Coach Mike
Ashman had first base runner Jarrod
Allen (Sr., Poway, San Diego Mesa CC) fall down
between first and second following a pitch. The Cal State L.A. catcher fired to
first, Allen got in a rundown and Jesse
Coffman (Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Chaffey College)
scored from third base for the winning run. Jeremey White (Sr., Palmdale, Riverside CC)
worked a scoreless seventh inning to complete the win in the nightcap of a
doubleheader for the Broncos. White blanked the Golden Eagles over the final
two innings to pick up the victory after Chris
Sotro (Sr., Upland,
Upland HS) worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings. The Broncos
trailed, 4-2, until Kenny McCarthy
(Sr., Moreno Valley,
Riverside CC) tied the game with a two-run single in the sixth inning. In the
opener, the Broncos got good pitching from Taylor
Wilding (So., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) and White,
but managed only two hits and lost to Cal State L.A., 3-1. Wilding gave up
seven hits and three runs over five innings, while White didn’t allow a hit and
struck out four over the final three innings. Coffman scored the only run for
the Broncos on a run-scoring single by Greg
Denning (Jr., Atascadero, Cuesta College)
in the sixth inning. Cal State L.A. got all its runs in the second inning. Cal
State L.A. limited the Broncos to only two runs in 18 innings of games played
Thursday and Friday at Scolinos Field. In the series
opener, the Golden Eagles scored three times in the ninth inning to win, 3-0. Efren Lira (Sr., Walnut, Mt.
San Antonio College) pitched a sensational game for the Broncos, blanking the
Golden Eagles on just two hits for the first eight innings. He gave up five
hits and only one earned run while walking two and striking out nine. Cal Poly
Pomona had only three hits, all singles, two of them by Allen. On Friday, Cal
State L.A. scored all six of its runs in its last four at bats and rallied past
the Broncos, 6-2. The Broncos took a 2-0 lead in the second inning with
McCarthy driving in a run and then scoring a run. Jose Munoz (Sr., Baldwin Park, Rio Hondo JC) carred
a shutout into the sixth inning, but Cal State L.A. scored one in the sixth,
one in the seventh and then took the lead with a two-run homer in the eight.
Munoz worked eight innings and gave up five hits and four runs. He also struck
out a career-high 13. The Broncos had only four hits in that one.
