MEN’S BASKETBALL: BRONCOS SALVAGE WEEKEND SPLIT

2003-04 Record: 12-5. 2003-04 CCAA Record: 8-4

2003-04 West Region Ranking: 6

DEFENDING WEST REGION CHAMPS REBOUND IN WIN OVER WARRIORS: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team bounced back nicely from a tough loss in Bakersfield on Friday with a 70-56 victory over Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday night in Turlock. The win enabled the Broncos to maintain a share of third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. David Sybesma (Jr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) had a sensational game for the Broncos, pouring in a career-high 27 points to go along with 10 rebounds. It was Sybesma’s third double-double in the past five games. Sybesma also added three assists, three blocks and three steals. Jeff Bonds (Jr., Compton, Mayfair HS) had 12 points and six rebounds, while Michael Ridgway (Sr., Houston, TX, Lamar University) had 12 points, six rebounds and one assist. Jason Burrell (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, St. Mark’s Prep) had a season-high five points, one rebound, one steal and one assist in 15 minutes off the bench. The Broncos trailed by one point, 22-21, late in the first half, but an 8-2 run to close the half put the Broncos ahead at halftime, 29-24. The Broncos led the entire second half, never by less than three points. Cal State Stanislaus trailed by five, 43-38, with 11:19 to go, but the Broncos put the game away with a 22-9 run over a seven-minute stretch. Back-to-back dunks by Sybesma and Ridgway were followed by two free throws by Bonds that gave Cal Poly Pomona a 67-47 advantage with two minutes left. The win was badly needed after a rough 57-45 loss to Cal State Bakersfield on Friday night. The defeat ended a five-game winning streak by the Broncos over the Roadrunners that was the longest Cal Poly Pomona streak in the history of the series. It also included three wins last season, most notably a 62-49 victory in the 2003 West Region semifinal game. The Roadrunners stifled the Bronco offense, limiting the Broncos to just 42 percent and allowing only two offensive rebounds. The Roadrunners held a commanding 38-21 rebounding edge for the game. Cal Poly Pomona’s defense was also solid and kept the Broncos in the game. Even though they shot just 33 percent in the first half, the Broncos only trailed by six, 26-20, at halftime. Cal State Bakersfield, though, permitted only eight points in the first 10 minutes of the second half and broke the game open. The Roadrunners held leads as large as 22 points before the Broncos made a last push. Guy Beahm (Sr., Willow Glen, West Valley JC) had 13 points to lead the Broncos and was the only Cal Poly Pomona player to reach double figures in scoring. Bonds and Sybesma had eight points each, while Dion Cook (Fr., Canoga Park, Chaminade HS) had seven points.

BRONCOS POST BIG ROAD WINS AT BAKERSFIELD, STANISLAUS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team recorded its first weekend sweep of California Collegiate Athletic Association contests and the Broncos did it in impressive fashion. The Broncos knocked off Cal State Bakersfield, 71-64, on Friday and then upended Cal State Stanislaus, 90-73, on Saturday. Cal Poly Pomona is now just one game out of first place in the CCAA behind co-leaders Grand Canyon and Cal State Bakersfield. The Broncos were able to defeat the Roadrunners on Friday behind a big second-half performance. After leading early, 15-4, the Broncos allowed 13 straight points and were eventually down at halftime, 33-28. Cal State Bakersfield then opened the second half with a 3-pointer and grabbed an eight point lead. Cal Poly Pomona, though, rallied and tied the game at 49-49 on a layup by Shanika Perkins (So., Oakland, Oakland HS). The game was tied again at 55-55 when the Broncos took the lead for good on a basket by Keila Beachem (Sr., Chicago, Ill., University of Kansas) with 4:14 to go. Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario, University of Arizona) scored eight points in the final 2:34 of the game to keep the Roadrunners at bay. Allen finished with a game-high 28 points, while Beachem had 21 points and 15 rebounds. Brandi Fletcher (So., Pomona, Diamond Ranch HS) had eight points and six rebounds, while Marisa Lattin (Sr., Oceanside, El Camino HS), returning to action after missing three games with a badly sprained ankle, had six points and four rebounds. Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed a 43-35 rebounding advantage. The Broncos then completed the weekend sweep with a 90-73 win at Cal State Stanislaus. Allen had 31 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals. Beachem had another strong outing for the Broncos, scoring 19 points to go along with nine rebounds. Jaida Williams (Sr., Opalocka, Fla., Barry University) had her career high since joining Cal Poly Pomona last season with 16 points. She also had five rebounds. Fletcher had 10 points and six rebounds. The Broncos held a 34-25 edge in rebounding and forced 30 Cal State Stanislaus turnovers.

BRONCOS RANKED FIFTH IN LATEST REGIONAL POLL: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team, which has won two NCAA Division II championships in the past three years, is ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division II West Region poll. The Broncos now own wins over No. 2 Cal State Bakersfield and No. 4 Western Washington. The polls are released weekly on Wednesdays.

BRONCOS HOPE TO PLAY IN FRONT OF A BIG PACK THE GYM NIGHT CROWD: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team will host Cal State Stanislaus on Friday as part of the annual Pack the Gym Night festivities. A free tailgate party will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the North side of Kellogg Gym. The women’s game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. The Broncos will have another big test on Saturday night when they face Cal State Bakersfield. BASEBALL: BRONCOS SPLIT FIRST TWO GAMES OF 2004

2004 Record: 1-1. 2004 CCAA Record: 0-0

BRONCOS WIN ONE, LOSE ONE IN CS DOMINGUEZ HILLS TOURNEY: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team, which has won 30 or more games in three of the past four seasons, defeated Cal State L.A., 13-3, at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday and then lost to Cal State San Bernardino, 10-3, Sunday at Scolinos Field to begin the 2004 season. The Broncos got a strong pitching performance from Jose Munoz (Sr., Baldwin Park, Rio Hondo JC) and plenty of hitting to beat the Golden Eagles in the season opener. Munoz allowed a home run to the first batter he faced and then not much else. Munoz went six innings and allowed only two hits and one run. He walked three and struck out eight. The Broncos supported Munoz with 11 hits, including home runs by Jason Stuck (Sr., Chino, Citrus College) and Chase Stroupe (So., San Clemente, San Clemente HS). Stuck led the team in home runs a year ago, while Stroupe hit the first home run of his Cal Poly Pomona career. Stuck was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. Greg Denning (Jr., Atascadero, Cuesta College) had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI while batting leadoff. The top three hitters in the Bronco lineup – Denning, Stroupe and Matt Stevens (Jr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) were a combined 5-for-15 with six runs scored and five runs driven in. James Valicenti (Fr., Huntington Beach, Marina HS) and Chris Sotro (Sr., Upland, Upland HS) pitched the final three innings for the Broncos. Sotro went the final two innings and blanked the Golden Eagles on one hit. Things didn’t go nearly as well on Sunday when Cal State San Bernardino spoiled the Broncos’ home opener, 10-3. The Broncos got home runs from Kenneth Galindo (Sr., Walnut, Mt. San Antonio College) and Jarrod Allen (Jr., Poway, San Diego Mesa College) and outstanding relief from Efren Lira (Sr., Walnut, Mt. San Antonio College) and Mike Foskett (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Rancho Cucamonga HS). Lira threw three scoreless innings and allowed only one hit, while Foskett worked a perfect ninth inning and struck out two.

BRONCOS HAVE PAIR OF HOME GAMES SET THIS WEEK: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team will have a busy week of competition that is scheduled to begin Tuesday with a home game against Biola University at Scolinos Field. The Broncos will also host UC Davis on Friday. Both home games are set for 2 p.m. starts. The Broncos will then play a doubleheader at Azusa Pacific on Saturday beginning at noon.
