DEFENDING WEST REGION
CHAMPS RECORD WEEKEND SWEEP: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team continued
its winning ways with a weekend home sweep over Cal State L.A. and Cal State
Dominguez Hills. The Broncos have now won five straight games and eight of
their last nine contests. Cal Poly Pomona is alone in third place in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association, two games behind second-place Cal
State Bakersfield. The Broncos and Roadrunners will meet this Friday in Bakersfield.
Cal Poly Pomona started the weekend with a 65-50 victory over Cal State L.A on
Friday. The Broncos limited the Golden Eagles to just 37 percent shooting and
overcame a 25-21 halftime deficit with an overwhelming 44-25 advantage in the
second half. Jeff Bonds (Jr.,
Compton, Mayfair HS) had 19 points and nine rebounds
to lead the Broncos, while David Sybesma (Jr., Corona,
Corona Centennial HS) had 14 points and five rebounds. Guy Beahm (Sr., Willow Glen, West Valley
JC) added 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. The Broncos also got a
solid performance from Jonathan Williams
(Sr., Pasadena, John Muir HS), who
had nine points, five assists and three rebounds. Most of Cal Poly Pomona’s top
players did the bulk of their scoring in the second half. Bonds had 15 of his
19 points in the second half, while Sybesma had 13 of
his 14 points in the second half. Williams also scored seven of his nine points
in the second 20 minutes. The victory came at an enormous cost, though, because
talented reserve Melvyn Nicholson
(So., Long Beach, Millikan HS) was lost for the
season with knee injury suffered in the first half of the game. Cal Poly Pomona
completed the weekend sweep with a 72-62 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on
Saturday. The game was tied at 47-47 with 9:53
to go, but Cal Poly Pomona scored the next eight points and led the rest of the
way. The Broncos boosted their lead to 63-51 with 4:05
remaining and led comfortably the rest of the way. Bonds and Michael Ridgway (Sr., Houston,
TX, Lamar University)
led the Broncos with 14 points each. Bonds also had five rebounds, while Ridgway added four rebounds. The Broncos also got another
strong outing from Sybesma, who recorded his second
double-double in three games with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Cal Poly Pomona
also enjoyed a big advantage from its bench. The Bronco reserves outscored the
Cal State Dominguez Hills reserves, 30-14. Ridgway
led the way with his 14 points, while Dion Cook (Fr., Canoga
Park, Chaminade
HS) and Jonathan Boyd (So., Fontana,
Etiwanda HS) had seven points each. Jason
Burrell (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, St. Mark’s Prep) had
two points and two assists.
BRONCOS RANKED
SEVENTH IN INITIAL REGIONAL POLL: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team,
the 2003 West Region champ, is ranked seventh in the first NCAA Division II
West Region poll of the season. The top eight teams will advance to the
playoffs. Cal State San Bernardino is the top-ranked team in the region, while
BYU-Hawaii is second and Cal State Bakersfield is third. Weekly polls will be
released on Tuesdays for the remainder of the season.
BRONCOS TO FACE KEY
TRIP THIS WEEKEND: Cal Poly Pomona will begin a critical two-week stretch
of games against California Collegiate Athletic Association rivals Cal State
Bakersfield and Cal State Stanislaus. The Broncos will be at Cal State
Bakersfield on Friday and Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday. Both games can be
heard via webcast on the Cal Poly Pomona athletic
website. The following week, the Broncos will host Cal State Stanislaus on
Friday, Feb. 6, in Kellogg Gym on “Pack The Gym” night
and entertain Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, Feb. 7.

BRONCOS EDGE GOLDEN
EAGLES, BUT FALL TO TOROS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team remains
stuck on rollercoaster mode. For the third straight week, the Broncos had to
settle for a weekend split of California Collegiate Athletic Association games.
The Broncos are tied for third in the conference with UC Davis. The Broncos
trail CCAA co-leaders Cal State Bakersfield and Grand Canyon
by two games. Cal Poly Pomona opened the weekend with a 75-73 victory over Cal
State L.A. that went down to the wire. The Broncos led by 10 points at
halftime, 41-31, but then fell behind, 58-51, with 9:53 remaining. The Broncos regained the lead and held a
68-64 advantage with 3:18 remaining,
but the Golden Eagles fought back and took a 72-69 lead with 42 seconds
remaining. Candice Allen (Sr., Ontario,
University
of Arizona) made a layup to cut the deficit to 72-71 with 30 seconds left. Tami Swanson-Cades (Sr., Nevada
City, Sierra College)
then stole the ball and got a rebound basket off her own miss to give the
Broncos a 73-72 edge with 20 seconds to go. Swanson-Cades made another steal to
give the Broncos possession again and Brandi
Fletcher (So., Pomona, Diamond Ranch HS) was fouled with six seconds left. She
missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but rebounded the
miss and was fouled again with four seconds remaining. This time, Fletcher made
both free throws to give the Broncos a 75-72 edge. Cal State L.A. got a break
when a foul was called on a desperation 3-pointer from just inside the halfcourt line at the buzzer, but the Golden Eagles only
converted one free throw and the Broncos held on for the win. Fletcher led the
Broncos with 22 points and nine rebounds. Keila Beachem (Sr., Chicago,
Ill., University of Kansas)
had 16 points and nine rebounds, while Swanson-Cades had 13 points to go along
with nine rebounds and six assists. Allen finished with a season-low 11 points.
The Broncos stumbled on Saturday night and fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills,
71-59. The defeat snapped a 14-game winning streak to the Toros
and was the first loss at home to the Toros since the
1995-96 season. Fletcher led the Broncos with 17
points and 10 rebounds. Allen and Jaida Williams
(Sr., Opalocka, Fla.,
Barry University)
scored 12 points each, while Shanika Perkins
(So., Oakland, Oakland HS) had 11
points. The Broncos trailed for nearly the entire game and were down at
halftime, 37-30. After a 10-0 run by Cal State Dominguez Hills to open the
second half, Cal Poly Pomona trailed by double-digit margins the rest of the
way.
BRONCOS RANKED FIFTH
IN FIRST REGIONAL POLL: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team, which
has won two NCAA Division II championships in the past three years, is ranked
fifth in the first NCAA Division II West Region poll. The top eight teams will
advance to the playoffs. Seattle Pacific is ranked first in the poll, while Grand
Canyon is second and Cal State Bakersfield is fourth.
BRONCOS TO EMBARK ON
A KEY ROAD TRIP: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team will face big
tests this weekend when the Broncos hit the road for a pair of California
Collegiate Athletic Association contests. The Broncos will face co-leader Cal
State Bakersfield at Bakersfield’s Centennial
Garden on Friday night and will
then be at Cal Stanislaus on Saturday night. Both games can be heard via webcast on the Cal Poly Pomona athletic department website.

BRONCOS SET TO OPEN
2004 SEASON: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team, which has won 30 or more
games in three of the past four seasons, will begin the 2004 season in a
tournament run by Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Broncos will face Cal State
L.A. on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m.
at Cal State Dominguez Hills in their season opener. The Broncos will then host
Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 10
a.m. at Scolinos Field in their home
opener. The game will be one of three straight home contests for the Broncos,
who also host Biola
University on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. and UC Davis on Friday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. Cal Poly Pomona had an uncharacteristic
losing season in 2003, although Efren Lira (Sr.,
Walnut, Mt. San Antonio College) threw the first solo nine-inning no-hitter in
Bronco history. Lira will headline what should be a talented pitching staff
that also includes veterans Jose Munoz
(Sr., Baldwin Park, Rio Hondo JC) and Chris
Sotro (Sr., Upland,
Upland HS). The Broncos return several talented position players, including
infielders Chase Stroupe
(So., San Clemente,
San Clemente HS) and Jason Stuck (Sr., Chino,
Citrus College)
and outfielder Matt Stevens (Jr.,
Riverside, Rubidoux HS). Infielders Jarrod Allen (Jr., Poway,
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) and Greg Denning (Jr., Atascadero,
Cuesta
College) head what should be an
impressive list of newcomers.
