Broncos Cruise Past UCSD

# 2 Cal Poly Pomona rolls past Tritons, 96-57

POMONA¾       If this was the final game in Kellogg Gym this season for the Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team, the Broncos certainly closed the show in style.

The Broncos rolled to a big first-half lead and breezed past UC San Diego, 96-57, Saturday night in Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly Pomona (21-4, 17-3) remained in a first-place tie with Cal State Bakersfield in the CCAA with two conference games remaining. The Broncos, the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II West Region, is still hoping to host the West Regional and will most likely need to win their final two games to do so.

In Saturday’s game, seniors Lauri McIntosh, Burgundie Porter and Kim Kennedy, who are concluding fine four-year careers with the Broncos, made sure Cal Poly Pomona would add to the glossy numbers they have accumulated since those three enrolled. With the victory, the Broncos improved their mark to 97-16 over the past four years, including an amazing 72-10 mark in the CCAA.

McIntosh (Sr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) scored a game-high 32 points and moved to within 14 points of second place on the all-time Cal Poly Pomona scoring list. Porter (Sr., San Dimas, San Dimas HS) added 19 points and four assists, while Kennedy (Sr., Walnut Creek, Carondelet HS) added a season-high eight points and two assists. The Broncos also got 10 points from another senior, first-year player Leah Whatley (Sr., Suisun, Tartleton State).

UC San Diego was led by Karina Siam with 11 points.

The outcome was never in doubt as the Broncos led from start to finish. After McIntosh, Porter, Kennedy, Whatley and Margot Richards (Sr., Orangevale, Erskine College) were recognized in a pregame ceremony, the Broncos quickly bolted to a big lead. After consecutive 3-pointers by Porter and Whatley and a pair of free throws by Kennedy, the Broncos led 26-12 and held a double-digit advantage the rest of the way. An eight-footer in the lane by McIntosh gave the Broncos their 54-27 halftime lead.

Cal Poly Pomona never led by less than 24 points in the second half and led by as many as 40 points.

The Broncos, who are now 56-6 in their last 62 games, will conclude the regular-season with road games at Sonoma State and San Francisco State.
