# 1 Cal Poly Pomona falls again to Aggies, 88-81
POMONA¾ The locale was different, but the result was the same for the
Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team.
The Broncos lost for the second time this season to UC Davis,
falling to the Aggies, 76-62, Saturday night in Kellogg Gym. The Broncos, the
defending NCAA Division II champs, were outscored 47-31 in the second half and
lost for the second time in their last three games at home.
Cal Poly Pomona (19-4, 15-3) fell into a first-place tie with
Cal State Bakersfield with four conference games remaining. Lauri McIntosh and
Burgundie Porter scored 14 points each to lead the Broncos, who came into the
game with a 54-5 record in their last 59 games. UC Davis (15-8, 11-7) had
beaten the Broncos in Davis on Jan. 4, 72-70.
The Broncos fell behind early, but then battled back and held a
31-23 lead with 2:04 remaining in the first half. UC Davis, though, went on a
6-0 run to close the halftime deficit to 31-29. Cal Poly Pomona upped its
advantage to 44-37 after a 3-pointer by Leah Whatley, but UC Davis went on an
8-0 run to take a 45-44 lead. A three-point play by Porter gave the Broncos a
47-45 advantage, but that was the last time they would lead. UC Davis finally
took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Colleen Turnbull, who had a game-high
23 points for the Aggies.
Cal Poly Pomona trailed by just two, 61-59, with 5:29 to go
after a basket by Aprile Powell, but the Aggies finished the game on a 15-3
run.
UC Davis also got 16 points from Sarah Allen and 10 points from
Shea Purkiss.
