Broncos Roll Past Antelopes

 

# 2 Cal Poly Pomona posts 79-48 CCAA victory

 

POMONA¾       This time, Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team made sure there would be no close calls.

      The Broncos wasted little time in jumping to a big lead and rolled to a 79-48 victory over Grand Canyon Friday night in Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly Pomona (20-4, 16-3) had squeaked by the Antelopes by just one point, 57-56, earlier this season.

      All-American center Aprile Powell (So., Santa Ana, Century HS) scored a season-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Broncos, while Lauri McIntosh, the second-leading scorer in the nation, added 21 points and six rebounds.

      Cal Poly Pomona, which has now posted its fourth straight 20-win season, shot 52.6 percent for the game. The Broncos also forced 26 Grand Canyon turnovers, led by McIntosh, who had a career-high eight steals. Cal Poly Pomona owned a 40-31 advantage on the boards.

      Several Broncos had solid games. Marisa Lattin (So., Oceanside, El Camino HS) had nine points and four rebounds, while Margot Richards (Sr., Orangevale, Erskine College) had eight points and three rebounds. Salma Rasheed (So., Walnut, Walnut HS) had seven points and five rebounds.

      Leah Smith scored 15 points to lead the Antelopes (4-20, 2-17).

      Cal Poly Pomona trailed early, 12-8, but went on a 15-0 run to grab a 23-12 advantage with 8:20 remaining in the first half. The Broncos extended their lead to 41-25 by halftime and led by 20 points or more the last 13 minutes of the game.

      The Broncos won for the 55th time in their last 61 conference games.
