# 1 Cal Poly Pomona runs past CS San Bernardino, 86-44
POMONA¾ On a night when the two top-ranked NCAA Division II basketball
teams were playing in the same gymnasium, Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball
team certainly played its part to a tee.
The No. 1 ranked Broncos won for the 21st straight
time at home and breezed past Cal State San Bernardino, 86-44, Wednesday night
at Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly Pomona (14-2, 10-1), the defending national champions,
had five players score in double figures while posting its sixth straight win.
Sophomore center Aprile Powell scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to
lead the Broncos, while senior guard Burgundie Porter added 13 points and five
assists.
The women’s game was the opener of a rare doubleheader
involving a pair of No. 1-ranked teams. Cal State San Bernardino’s men are also
ranked No. 1 and were playing Cal Poly Pomona later Wednesday.
The Broncos also got 10 points and two assists from Leah
Whatley, 10 points and four rebounds from Salma Rasheed and a season-high 10
points from Heather Reeder.
Cal State San Bernardino (9-7, 5-6) got nine points and four
rebounds from Chelsea Carte and nine points and six rebounds from Erica Cronin.
After falling behind early, 12-7, the Broncos assumed control
of the game in the first half. Cal Poly Pomona went on a 36-7 run over a
14-minute stretch to take a 43-19 lead. Cal State San Bernardino got the lead
down to 16 points early in the second half, but the Broncos went on a 19-2 run to
erase any hopes of a comeback.
Lauri McIntosh, who came into the game as the nation’s No. 2
scorer, battled foul trouble and scored nine points. It was the first time in
14 games this season McIntosh has not reached double figures. McIntosh had four
rebounds and two assists.
