# 1 Cal Poly Pomona wins its eighth straight, 77-63
POMONA¾ The play wasn’t always
flawless, but, once again, Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team got the
job done.
The Broncos jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to a
77-63 victory over Cal State Stanislaus Friday night in Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly
Pomona (16-2, 12-1) got balanced scoring to offset an outstanding performance
from Cal State Stanislaus center Shannon Donnelly, who poured in a game-high 28
points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The Broncos had three players score in double
figures and 11 players in all scored for the defending NCAA Division II champs.
Lauri McIntosh (Sr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) had a
team-high 14 points and nine rebounds to lead the Broncos, who won for the
eighth straight time this season and recorded their 22nd straight
victory at home. Cal Poly Pomona is now 51-4 in its last 55 CCAA games. Aprile
Powell (So., Santa Ana, Century HS) had 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Margot
Richards (Sr., Orangevale, Erskine College) added 10 points.
Cal Poly Pomona also got a big boost off the bench in the first
half from Heather Reeder (Jr., Wenatche, WA, University of Portland), who had
nine points and three rebounds. The Broncos came out blazing from beyond the
3-point arc Friday, burying seven of their 14 long-range attempts.
Cal State Stanislaus (8-10, 5-8) had a three-game winning
streak snapped and lost to the Broncos for the eighth straight time. Donnelly,
though, had a big night, hitting 10 of 14 field-goal attempts and making eight
of 12 free-throw tries.
She was the only Warrior player, though, to score more than
nine points.
The Broncos jumped out to a quick lead when Anna James (Jr.,
Orangevale, Casa Roble HS) hit a 3-pointer to open the game and they never
trailed. They built leads as large as 13 points in the opening half before
settling for a 46-37 halftime edge.
Cal Poly Pomona extended its lead to 21 points midway through
the second half, 69-48, on a jumper by Leah Whatley (Sr., Suisun, Tartleton
State) and then maintained a steady lead the rest of the way. Cal State
Stanislaus never got closer than 11 points.
The Broncos shot just 40 percent for the game, but held Cal
State Stanislaus to 40 percent shooting and also forced 28 turnovers. Powell
had five steals to lead the Broncos.
