Broncos Earn National Attention

POMONA¾ The impressive starts by the Cal Poly Pomona tennis teams have earned the Broncos some national notoriety.

The Cal Poly Pomona women moved into the national rankings for the first time since 1999 when the Broncos were ranked 17th in the NCAA Division II poll released Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Broncos are off to a 3-0 start and recorded an eye-opening 6-3 victory over then-No. 6 Grand Canyon on Feb. 3. Cal Poly Pomona won its CCAA opener on Tuesday with an 8-1 victory over Cal State L.A.

The Broncos have won four national championships in women’s tennis and 10 CCAA titles. The last conference championship for Cal Poly Pomona came in 1998.

The Cal Poly Pomona men, meanwhile, are ranked 24th in the nation. The Broncos were ranked 23rd in the fall preseason poll. The Broncos are off to a 3-1 start and their only loss so far is a 6-3 decision at UC San Diego, which is ranked 20th in the nation. Cal Poly Pomona posted a 6-3 win over Cal State L.A. on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized, but we have to keep working hard,” Cal Poly Pomona tennis coach Sandy Kriezel said. “The season is still young and we have some things to work on. We’re looking forward to some big matches later this season.”

The Cal Poly Pomona men will be hosting the California Invitational, a team competition, beginning on Friday. The Cal Poly Pomona women, meanwhile, will host UC Davis in a key CCAA match Saturday morning at Pacific Palms Tennis Center. The UC Davis women are ranked eighth in the nation.
