Cal Poly Pomona Expands Radio Exposure
Selected Bronco basketball games will be broadcast on KWRM

POMONA—Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s and women’s basketball programs received a big boost Wednesday with the signing of a radio broadcast package for the 2002-03 season.

Bronco Athletic Director Dr. Dan Bridges signed the new deal Wednesday with Corona-based KWRM (AM-1370). Five CCAA doubleheaders will be aired as well as a pair of single games. Both the men’s and women’s teams will have six games broadcast. A sixth doubleheader could be added at a later date, Bridges said.

As part of the package, the station will run promos for the games and provide posters advertising the broadcasts. Head coaches Greg Kamansky and Paul Thomas will be available to make appearances on the station’s sports talk shows. Pregame and postgame shows might also be included, depending on the length of the games.

“It’s definitely a step up for us. It should greatly enhance our visibility,” Bridges said. “It will also give our sponsors more marketing opportunities and exposure.”

Seven Cal Poly Pomona men’s games were broadcast last season, but this will be a first for the women’s team, which is the two-time defending NCAA Division II champion. The five doubleheaders include Jan. 3 contests against Cal State Dominguez Hills, Jan. 24 games against Sonoma State, Feb. 7 road games at Cal State L.A., Feb. 8 road contests at Cal State Dominguez Hills and Feb. 15 home games against Chico State. In addition, the men’s non-conference game against Montana State-Billings on Dec. 30 and the women’s game on Dec. 17 against Texas A&M Kingsville will also be aired.

“This is a great opportunity for us to give our women’s team some added exposure. Last year, only men’s games were aired,” Bridges said. “This year, we’re excited to put both of our teams on commercial radio.”

A doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino on Dec. 7 might also be added depending on station availability. The women will hang their national championship banner on that evening.

The deal comes at an exciting time for Cal Poly Pomona’s basketball programs. The women are riding high as the two-time defending NCAA Division II champs, while the men are coming off an 18-9 season that included a 15-7 mark in the CCAA and a third-place finish, which is the best for the Broncos since the CCAA expanded.

“It’s another step in the right direction for Cal Poly Pomona basketball,” Kamansky said. “We want to become more visible and being on a bigger radio station will definitely help us achieve that.”

The broadcasts on KWRM will be heard in the evenings as far East as Redlands and as far West as Manhattan Beach. The games will also be picked up as far South as Carlsbad and can be heard throughout the Inland Valley.

“I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for both programs,” Thomas said. “I’m hoping this will boost our fan base. Anything we can do to promote the quality programs we have is a positive thing.”

Many of the remaining games that will not be carried on commercial radio will be aired via the university’s Web cast.
