WALNUT CREEK – Cal Poly Pomona freshman tennis player Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis got off to quite a start in her college career.
Ortiz-Luis (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Rancho Cucamonga HS) was named the Head/Penn CCAA Player of the Week on Wednesday after her smashing tennis debut last week in the Cal State L.A. Tennis Invitational. Ortiz-Luis went 3-1 in the tourney and advanced to the championship of the women’s singles Flight 1-2. She defeated opponents from Cal State San Bernardino (6-0, 6-0), Grand Canyon (6-1, 6-2) and Loyola Marymount (7-5, 6-4) before falling to Loyola Marymount’s No. 1 player, Andrea Lord, 4-6, 5-7, in the final.
Ortiz-Luis also teamed with Michelle Hammond (Jr., Tulare, College of the Sequoias) and reached the semifinals in the Flight 1 doubles competition.
Ortiz-Luis becomes the first tennis player from Cal Poly Pomona to win the weekly honor since the CCAA began the award.
