POMONA¾ The defense that Cal Poly
Pomona prides itself in showed up in fine fashion Friday night.
The Broncos limited San Francisco State to just 17 first-half
points and rolled to a 69-44 victory over the Gators Friday night in Kellogg
Gym. Cal Poly Pomona (10-4, 7-2) got scoring from 13 different players while
remaining unbeaten at home in five contests. The Broncos had just completed a
stretch of nine road games in their first 13 contests.
Freshman forward David Sybesma scored a game-high 13 points in
the defensive struggle, while fellow freshman Jeff Bonds and sophomore guard
Jonathan Williams added 10 points each. Cal Poly Pomona limited San Francisco
State to just 36 percent shooting from the floor and forced 22 turnovers. The
44 points allowed by the Broncos was a season-low, eclipsing the 47 they gave
up to Cal State Bakersfield in a 67-47 win in December.
Dante Carey scored nine points to lead the Gators, who came
into the game with a 4-1 record on the road in conference games. San Francisco
State (7-9, 5-5) scored only 37 points in a loss at Kellogg Gym a year ago.
The Broncos built a 29-17 lead by halftime and opened up leads
as 30 points in the second half.
Lucas LeCour had six points, six rebounds and three assists
despite missing nine of his 10 field-goal attempts. Rafael Zielonka added seven
points and two rebounds and also had two steals. Jonathan Williams paced the
defensive effort with four steals, one of which led to a rousing slam dunk that
had the Kellogg Gym crowd on its feet.
The Broncos, who were coming off a 93-66 win over Grand Canyon,
was hot once again from 3-point range. Cal Poly Pomona hit six of 10 Grand
Canyon and made seven of 15 against San Francisco State. Seven different Bronco
players – LeCour, Marques Montgomery, Jonathan Williams, T.J. Williams, Andy
Bratt, Yousef Etemadi and Sybesma – hit 3-pointers.
