POMONA¾ Cal Poly Pomona made sure this big lead would not get away.
The Broncos raced out to a 15-point halftime lead and kept
Grand Canyon at bay, rolling to an 86-69 victory over the Antelopes Friday
night in Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly Pomona (16-8, 13-6) shot 52 percent for the game
and owned a 47-34 advantage on the boards.
It was also a historic night for the Broncos. Four-year Bronco
Lucas LeCour (Sr., Las Vegas, Las Vegas HS) became Cal Poly Pomona’s all-time
leading scorer with 1,271 points. LeCour had 18 points and a season-high nine
rebounds and broke the record with a 3-pointer late in the game. LeCour broke
the old mark of 1,270 set by Julian Hammond in 2000.
Cal Poly Pomona also got a big night from one of its young
stars, forward Jeff Bonds (Fr., Compton, Mayfair HS), who scored a game-high 23
points. Bonds matched his season high while hitting eight of his nine
field-goal attempts and seven of his nine free-throw attempts. Marques
Montgomery (Sr., Cerritos, Valley Christian HS) had 11 points and matched a
season high with six rebounds, while Steve Lambert (Jr., Covina, Charter Oak
HS) also had 11 points and four rebounds.
The Broncos grabbed control early and led by 10 points, 20-10,
just eight minutes into the game after a 3-pointer by T.J. Williams (Sr., Dana
Point, Santa Margarita HS). The Antelopes made a run to close the gap to 26-25,
but the Broncos closed out the half with a 20-6 spurt to take a 46-31 halftime
lead.
Grand Canyon got to within seven points early in the second
half, but the Broncos led by at least 11 points for the last 14 minutes of the
game.
With the win, the Broncos, who are ranked 10th in
the NCAA Division II West Region, remained in third place in the CCAA.
