Cal Poly Pomona keeps pace in CCAA with 76-57 win over Chico State

POMONA¾ Cal Poly Pomona made sure there was no peaking ahead to Saturday night’s big game against UC Davis.

The Broncos maintained their hold on third place in the CCAA and kept pace with the two teams above them with a 76-57 victory over Chico State Friday night in Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly Pomona (15-7, 12-5) won for the ninth time in 10 home games this season and extended its advantage over fourth-place UC Davis to two games. Cal Poly Pomona is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II West Region.

Lucas LeCour led the Broncos with 18 points, while freshman David Sybesma had 15 points and 10 rebounds in his second start of the season. Raymond Hubbard also scored 15 points for the Broncos, who won easily despite shooting just 33.9 percent from the floor. Ben Perak had 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead Chico State (5-17, 3-14).

The Broncos jumped ahead early, scoring the first seven points of the game and leading, 27-9, less than 10 minutes into the game. The Broncos held leads as large as 23 points in the first half and had a 44-29 advantage at halftime.

Cal Poly Pomona built its biggest lead of the second half at 52-31 and the Broncos still had a 64-48 edge with eight minutes left in the game. Chico State, though, went on a 9-0 run to close the gap to 64-57, closing the streak with a 3-pointer by Scott Land.

The Broncos, though, scored the last 12 points of the game and cruised to their second straight victory and fourth win in their last five games.
