Broncos Get Back On Winning Track

 

Cal Poly Pomona upends Cal State Stanislaus, 86-57

 

POMONA¾ After two close calls against No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team needed to get back on the winning track.

      The Broncos did just that, shooting a sizzling 55 percent from the floor and running away from Cal State Stanislaus, 86-57, Friday night in Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly Pomona (12-6, 9-4) snapped its brief two-game losing streak and improved to 7-1 at home this season.

      Lucas LeCour scored a team-high 18 points to lead the Broncos, 16 in the second half as the Cal Poly Pomona turned the game into a one-sided affair. After leading 33-26 at halftime, the Broncos outscored the Warriors, 53-31, in the second half. Cal Poly Pomona shot 61.5 percent in the second half.

      Jeff Davenport scored 20 points to lead Cal State Stanislaus (8-10, 5-8), while Brad Watkins added 12 points and Jamal O’Quinn had 10.

      LeCour was the only Cal Poly Pomona player to hit double figures, but the Broncos had great balance. Thirteen players scored in the game for the Broncos.

      Jonathan Williams scored nine points and had five assists for the Broncos, while T.J. Williams added nine points and five rebounds. Jeff Bonds, David Sybesma and Steve Lambert scored eight points each. The Broncos held a slim 39-37 edge on the boards and forced 19 turnovers while committing only eight themselves. LeCour had four steals and Jonathan Williams added two.

      The Broncos trailed only once, 4-2, and went on a 15-3 run to take a 17-7 edge halfway through the first half. The Broncos led by as many as 13 points before settling for a 33-26 halftime lead.

      Cal State Stanislaus got as close as six points, 35-29, early in the second half, but the Broncos went on a 13-0 run to take a 48-29 lead and essentially decide the game.

      Cal Poly Pomona held leads as large as 33 points. The Broncos were a red-hot eight-of-13 from 3-point range. T.J. Williams hit three 3-pointers for the Broncos, while LeCour added two. Andy Bratt, Marques Montgomery and Jonathan Williams each hit one 3-pointer.
