Broncos Start Well In Tennis Tourney

Cal Poly Pomona players advance in Bronco Tennis Classic

POMONA ¾ Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s tennis team is making itself quite at home this weekend, which is probably a good thing.

After all, the Broncos are hosting the 2002 Bronco Tennis Classic that got underway Friday at Cal Poly Pomona and the Pacific Palms Tennis Center. The tournament continues Saturday and will conclude on Sunday.

In first-day action, four Cal Poly Pomona players advanced to the round of 16 in Men’s Singles Flights 1-4. Ryan Terry (Jr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar) received a bye in the first round and then survived a major struggle against Chapman’s Ali Kermani, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, while Andy Roland (Jr., Hollywood, Glendale CC) defeated Chris Mark of Saddleback, 6-3, 6-0, after receiving a first-round bye. In the other half of the Flights 1-4 draw, JR Villaroman (Sr., Anaheim, Troy HS) received a first-round bye and then defeated Jason Efstathiou of Saddleback, 6-2, 6-2. David Nguyen (So., Los Angeles, Beverly Hills HS) defeated Parth Venkat of Cal Tech, 6-0, 6-0 and was leading Arif Hasan of Cal Lutheran, 5-2, when Hasan had to retire.

In the Men’s Singles Flights 5-8, A.J. Feliz (Sr., San Gabriel, New Mexico Military Institute) received a first-round bye and then beat Brian Manning of Redlands, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. Cal Poly Pomona’s Gary Ward defeated Ryan Plourde of Redlands, 7-6, 6-2 and then beat David Gilbert of Westmont, 6-4, 6-2. Nguyen Than (Jr., Garden Grove, Loara HS) of Cal Poly Pomona advanced with a victory over Matt Rigdon of Saddleback. On the other half of the bracket, Cal Poly Pomona’s Seamus Sullivan (Jr. Palos Verdes, Peninsula HS) beat Kyle Hianaga of Redlands, 6-1, 6-2, while Kevin Chen (Jr., Rancho Bernardo, Torrey Pines HS) defeated Todd Lindbloom of Azusa Pacific, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

The doubles brackets were just getting underway Friday afternoon. Complete results from today’s action will be updated later this evening on the Cal Poly Pomona athletic web site.
