Top singles players advance in first-round action at Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA- Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s tennis team opened strongly Friday in first-day action at the Bronco Elite Invitational.

Singles players Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Rancho Cucamonga HS), Dehlia Feliz (Fr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS), Michelle Hammond (Jr., Tulare, College of the Sequoias), Lisa Jones (Sr., Visalia, College of the Sequoias), Jennie Burggraf (So., Chino Hills, Ayala HS), Priscilla De Vera (So., Walnut, St. Lucy’s HS) and Julie Manning (Sr., Capistrano Beach, San Clemente HS) also advanced in first-round action.

The tourney continues Saturday and will conclude on Sunday.

Ortiz-Luis, the No. 1 singles player for Cal Poly Pomona who has already earned two CCAA Player of the Week nods, defeated Tanya Leontieff of Point Loma, 6-0, 6-1. Feliz beat Holli Hargrove of Pt. Loma, 6-3, 6-3, Hammond upended Lindsay Doyle of Vanguard, 6-2, 6-3 and Jones beat Silina Yohner of Vanguard, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in Singles Flight 1-4. In Flight 5-8, Burggraf beat Andrea Yorkey of Azusa Pacific, 6-1, 6-1, De Vera ousted Mintay Nguyen of Azusa Pacific, 6-1, 6-0 and Manning beat Crystal Hoffman of Vanguard, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles, Ortiz-Luis and Hammond advanced with an 8-1 victory over a team from Point Loma, while Feliz-Jones advanced on a bye.
