Cal Poly Pomona players advance in Bronco Tennis Classic
POMONA ¾ Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s tennis team is hoping for a Super Sunday, although their thoughts have nothing to do with football.
The Broncos have three singles players still vying for individual titles and one doubles team still alive in the 2002 Bronco Tennis Classic.
Ryan Terry (Jr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) and JR Villaroman (Sr., Anaheim, Troy HS) have reached the semis in the Men’s Singles Flights 1-4, while Seamus Sullivan (Jr. Palos Verdes, Peninsula HS) is in the semis of the Men’s Singles Flights 5-8. The doubles team of Terry and Andy Roland (Jr., Hollywood, Glendale CC) have reached the finals of the Men’s Doubles 1-2.
Terry recorded a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Peter Skrzeczynski of Vanguard and then beat Rye Kashiwabara of College of the Desert, 6-1, 6-3. Villaroman beat Gordon Hong of Azusa Pacific, 6-2, 6-2 and advanced by default past Brian Swatt of UC San Diego.
Sullivan, meanwhile, beat Sean Nagel of UC San Diego, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and then ousted Daniel Briseno of College of the Desert.
In doubles, Terry and Roland teams from Azusa Pacific and UC San Diego to make its run to the finals.
