POMONA ¾ Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team continues to roll.
The Broncos got another solid start from David Krisch (Sr., El Cajon, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) and another save from Ricky Wooten (So., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) and another victory – this one a 7-6 decision over Cal State L.A. Friday in Los Angeles.
Gregor Connors (Sr., Poway, Palomar College) led a 12-hit Cal Poly Pomona attack with his first home run of the season, while Andy Gonzales (Fr., Whittier, California HS) had three hits and scored three runs. Gonzales is now hitting .500 on the season.
Cal Poly Pomona (7-2-1, 2-0) also got two hits each from Jose Munoz (Jr., Baldwin Park, Rio Hondo JC) and Jason Welch (Sr., Diamond Bar, Santa Ana JC). Cal State L.A. (5-11, 2-4) also had 12 hits, but came up short in a late comeback bid.
The Broncos broke open a 1-1 game with a three-run fourth inning. Connors singled to start the rally and moved to third on a double by Welch. Benny Winslow (Jr., Tucson, AZ, Cuesta College) singled in both runners to give the Broncos a 3-1 edge. Brian Ziarnick (Jr., Chino, Fullerton JC) singled in another run later in the inning.
After the Golden Eagles sliced the lead to 4-2, the Broncos struck for two more runs in the fifth inning. Anthony Gonzales (Jr., Whittier, Santa Ana JC) singled and Connors followed with a two-run home run.
Krisch (3-0) pitched six strong innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, two of them earned. He left after allowing the first two batters to reach base in the seventh inning. Munoz came on in relief and got the Broncos out of the inning without any damage.
Ziarnick got his second RBI in the top of the eighth inning on a groundout to give Cal Poly Pomona a 7-3 advantage.
Cal State L.A. made it close with three runs in the eighth inning before Wooten got the final out and the Cal Poly Pomona closer retired the Golden Eagles in order in the ninth for his fourth save of the season. He is already closing in on the single-season save record at Cal Poly Pomona, which stands at five.
The Broncos and Golden Eagles will conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at Cal State L.A. beginning at noon.
