Five-Game Losing Streak
Cal Poly Pomonas Tony Ortiz and Jose Munoz lead Broncos
to 6-2 win over UC San Diego
POMONA, CALIF. æ Behind solid pitching performances
from Tony Ortiz and no-hit relief appearance by Jose Munoz,
Cal Poly Pomona ended a five-game losing streak with a 6-2
win over UC San Diego Thursday afternoon on Scolinos Field.
Ortiz
(2-3) held UCSD scoreless through the first three innings
before being pulled in the sixth inning with one out, runners
at second and third for the Tritons. The 5-9, right-handed
Munoz came on in relief to get the Broncos out of the jam.
After
intentionally walked Chad Addison to load the bases, Munoz
forced Keith Hernandez into a fielders choice as CPP
third baseman Benny Winslow threw out Jeff Riddle at the plate.
Matt Kennison would then ground out to shortstop Anthony Gonzales
to end the Tritons rally.
Munoz
would go the rest of the way, three and two-thirds inning,
giving up no runs, no hits, three strikeouts and no walks.
Ortiz numbers were two runs on six hits with two strikeouts
and three walks in five and one-third innings of work.
Leading
by one in the seventh inning, 3-2, Pomona (11-9-1, 6-7 CCAA)
broke this game open with three runs including a two-run triple
by Anthony Gonzales that gave the Broncos the four-run lead.
Benny
Winslow led the Bronco bats going 2-for-3 with two RBI while
Gregor Connors went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
For UCSD (13-9-1, 8-5 CCAA), Ryan Larson and Anthony Lococo
each had two hits. Starting pitcher Keith Smith falls to 4-3
on the season as Smith gave up four runs on six hits with
eight strikeouts and three walks.
Cal Poly
Pomona and UC San Diego continue there four-game series with
a single game Friday afternoon on Pomonas Scolinos Field
at 2:30 p.m.
