CAN’T HOLD OFF UC DAVIS: Cal Poly
Pomona’s men’s basketball team suffered its most stunning loss of the season
when the Broncos couldn’t hold a 15-point lead with 11 minutes to play and
dropped an 85-71 decision to UC Davis. The loss damages Cal Poly Pomona’s hopes
for its first NCAA Division II postseason appearance since 1976 and it also
trimmed the third-place Broncos’ lead over fourth-place UC Davis to just one
game. Lucas LeCour (Sr., Las Vegas, Las Vegas HS) scored a
season-high 24 points for the Broncos, while David Sybesma (Fr., Corona,
Corona Centennial HS) added 13 points and Marques Montgomery
contributed 12 points. The Broncos led for the first 34 minutes of the game and
held a 61-46 advantage with 11:07 to go after back-to-back 3-pointers by T.J. Williams (Sr., Dana Point, Santa Margarita HS) and
LeCour. UC Davis, though, went on a 20-6 run over the next five minutes and
took its first lead. Things only got worse from there for the Broncos, who made
only two baskets in the last 11 minutes – one a tip-in by Rafael Zielonka (Sr., Anaheim Hills, Servite HS). The Broncos had more success on Friday
night in a 76-57 win over Chico State. The Broncos jumped ahead early, 7-0, and
led by as many as 23 points in the first half. Cal Poly Pomona held a 44-29
halftime edge and boosted its second-half lead to 52-31. Chico State was able
to cut the lead to seven points, 64-57, but the Broncos scored the final 12
points of the game. LeCour led the Broncos with 18 points, while Sybesma had 15
points and a season-high 10 rebounds. Raymond Hubbard (Sr., Chicago, Cuyamaca CC) also had a strong game with 15 points for
the Broncos.
BRONCOS TO CONCLUDE HOME SCHEDULE, HOPE TO PACK THE GYM: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team will play its final two home games of the season this weekend. Fans are asked to bring a canned food item to help the Bronco Athletic Association collect food for a local charity. On Saturday night, the Broncos will entertain UC San Diego at 8 p.m. The eight Cal Poly Pomona seniors on the men’s basketball team will be honored for their contributions to the program.
BRONCOS SLIP TO NINTH IN REGIONAL POLL: The road loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 8 knocked the Broncos down to ninth in the latest NCAA Division II West Region poll that was released on Feb. 13. A new poll will be out Wednesday. The top six teams in the region advance to the NCAA playoffs.

BRONCOS LOSE FOR SECOND TIME THIS SEASON TO AGGIES : Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team had hoped to even the score against UC Davis last Saturday, but the Broncos instead saw the Aggies pull away down the stretch for a 76-62 decision. UC Davis had also beaten the Broncos on Jan. 4 in Davis, 72-70. Cal Poly Pomona led by as many as eight points in the first half and still had a 31-29 halftime advantage. UC Davis, though, outscored the Broncos, 47-31, in the second half. Cal Poly Pomona trailed by only two points, 61-59, with 5:29 to go after a basket by Aprile Powell (So., Santa Ana, Century HS), but UC Davis finished the game on a 15-3 run to hand the Broncos their second home defeat in their last three contests. Lauri McIntosh (Sr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) and Burgundie Porter (Sr., San Dimas, San Dimas HS) scored 14 points for the Broncos. Things went much better for the Broncos on Friday night when they completed a season sweep of Chico State with an 88-81 victory. McIntosh poured in 33 points to lead the Broncos, while Porter had 18 points and Powell had 11 points and seven rebounds. Cal Poly Pomona trailed early, but recovered in time to take a 44-40 halftime lead. The Broncos built their edge to 15 points, 63-48, with 12:38 to go and then had to weather a Chico State comeback that sliced the lead to two points, 81-79, with 1:59 to go. Marisa Lattin (So., Oceanside, El Camino HS) made four free throws in the final minute to help the Broncos preserve the advantage.
BRONCOS REMAIN FIRST IN REGIONAL POLL, REGAIN TOP SPOT IN THE NATION: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team remained atop the NCAA Division II West Region poll in the Feb. 13 rankings and jumped back up to No. 1 in the national poll after the road wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. BRONCOS SWEEP CAL STATE L.A.: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team is off to one of its best starts ever after a four-game sweep of Cal State L.A. gave the Broncos a sparkling 9-2-1 record through 12 games. The Broncos have also taken the early lead in the CCAA with a 4-0 mark and have moved into the NCAA Division II national rankings at No. 17. Cal Poly Pomona won three of the four games against Cal State L.A. by one run and then polished off the Golden Eagles in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader by a 13-7 count. The Broncos opened the series with a 3-2 victory on Thursday thanks to an outstanding pitching performance from Tony Ortiz (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Mt. SAC), who went seven innings and allowed only two unearned runs. Jason Welch (Sr., Diamond Bar, Santa Ana JC) snapped a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring double that drove in Gregor Connors (Sr., Poway, Palomar College) in the top of the eighth inning. From there, Jose Munoz (Jr., Baldwin Park, Rio Hondo JC) and Ricky Wooten (So., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) combined for two innings of scoreless relief. On Friday, the Broncos prevailed, 7-6. Connors smacked his first home run of the season, while Andy Gonzales (Fr., Whittier, California HS) had three hits and scored three runs. Munoz and Welch had two hits each. David Krisch (Sr., El Cajon, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) pitched six strong innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, two of them earned. Krisch is now 3-0. Munoz and Wooten once again finished the game for the Broncos and Wooten picked up his fourth save. That is just one behind the Cal Poly Pomona single-season record of five. Cal Poly Pomona then swept a doubleheader from the Golden Eagles on Saturday. The Broncos won the opener, 7-6. The Broncos had 26 hits in the doubleheader and Welch homered in both games. Kevin Waldinger (Sr., Yorba Linda, Fullerton JC) pitched seven strong innings to pick up the win in Game 1, while Welch and Anthony Gonzales (Jr., Whittier, Santa Ana JC) drove in two runs each and belted home runs. In the nightcap, Andrew Perkins (Jr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) made his season debut and pitched four impressive innings to get the win. Perkins missed all of last season with a shoulder injury. Welch had three RBI to lead the offensive attack, while Jonathan Alexander (Sr., Covina, Citrus College) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Andy Gonzales had two RBI, while Matt Stevens (Fr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) had a triple and a pair of walks and scored three times.
