BRONCOS
REMAIN IN THIRD AFTER ROAD SPLIT: Cal
Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team knew it had its work cut out for it last
weekend with tough road games at Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A.
The Broncos wound up with mixed results, dropping a hard-fought 69-59 decision
to the much-improved Toros on Friday night and then bouncing back with an
impressive 73-58 victory over the Golden Eagles on Saturday night. Cal Poly
Pomona played one of its best all-around games of the season in the win over
Cal State L.A. The Broncos led from start to finish and allowed only five
first-half baskets to the Golden Eagles. Cal Poly Pomona led at halftime,
33-23, had its lead sliced to four points late in the game and then went on a
crucial 9-0 run to put the game away. Lucas LeCour (Sr., Las
Vegas, Las Vegas HS) led the Broncos with 19 points, two rebounds, two assists
and two steals, while Raymond
Hubbard (Sr., Chicago, Cuyamaca CC)
added 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Marques Montgomery (Sr.,
Cerritos, Valley Christian HS) had a solid game with 10 points, five rebounds
and two assists. The Broncos hit seven of their 14 attempts from behind the
3-point line and shot 53.5 percent from the floor. Cal Poly Pomona also owned a
28-24 rebounding edge and forced 15 Cal State L.A. turnovers. The weekend
started on a tough note when the Broncos fell to red-hot Cal State Dominguez
Hills, 69-59. The victory was the fifth straight for the Toros, who were able
to withstand an impressive Cal Poly Pomona rally. The Broncos fell behind,
21-6, in the first seven minutes of the game and trailed at halftime, 34-25.
The Broncos cut the lead down to two points on three occasions, but just couldn’t
quite get over the hump. While the Toros shot 53.7 percent from the floor, the
Broncos were able to make only 34.3 percent of their shots, including a cold
4-of-22 from behind the 3-point arc. Steve Lambert (Jr., Covina,
Charter Oak HS) had a season-high 16 points for the Broncos, while Hubbard
scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Jeff Bonds (Fr., Compton,
Mayfair HS) added 10 points and four rebounds.
BRONCOS TO PLAY NEXT FOUR GAMES AT HOME: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team will play its next four games at home, beginning with a pair of games this weekend in Kellogg Gym. The Broncos, who are trying to reach the NCAA postseason for the first time since 1976, will face Chico State on Friday at 8 p.m. and meet UC Davis on Saturday at 8 p.m. The Broncos are currently in third place in the CCAA, one game ahead of UC Davis. Cal Poly Pomona will conclude the home portion of its 2001-02 schedule the following weekend against Grand Canyon and UC San Diego.
BRONCOS CLIMB TO EIGHTH IN REGIONAL POLL: Two home victories, including one that completed a season sweep over Cal State Bakersfield, enabled the Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team to climb from ninth to eighth in the NCAA Division II West Region poll released on Feb. 6. A new poll will be out this Wednesday.
2001-02 Overall Record: 18-3, CCAA Record: 14-2.

BRONCOS BOUNCE BACK WITH WINS OVER TOROS, GOLDEN EAGLES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team rebounded from its lastest bit of adversity by winning a pair of road games over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. The Broncos were playing their first games since falling to Cal State Bakersfield and losing starting guard Anna James (Jr., Orangevale, Casa Roble HS) for the season with a knee injury. It took the Broncos one half of basketball at Cal State Dominguez Hills to get things rolling last weekend. The Broncos took a 39-36 halftime lead on a clutch 3-pointer by Marisa Lattin (So., Oceanside, El Camino HS) and then began pulling away from the Toros in the second half. Cal Poly Pomona outscored Cal State Dominguez Hills, 44-26, in the second half. Lauri McIntosh (Sr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) had a big night for the Broncos, pouring in a game-high 26 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. Aprile Powell (So., Santa Ana, Century HS) also had a productive game, scoring 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Burgundie Porter (Sr., San Dimas, San Dimas HS) had 13 points and four rebounds, while Lattin finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Cal Poly Pomona owned a 45-34 edge on the boards. The following night, the Broncos jumped out to a quick early lead and rolled to a 97-74 victory over Cal State L.A. Cal Poly Pomona led by 19 points in the first half, 36-17, before settling for a 49-37 halftime lead. For the second straight game, Lattin hit a 3-pointer as the first half was winding to a close. Cal Poly Pomona built its lead up to 24 points, 75-51, halfway through the second half and cruised from there. McIntosh paced the Broncos once again with 25 points and 12 rebounds, leading five other players in double figures. Porter had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists, Margot Richards (Sr., Orangevale, Erskine College), Powell and Lattin had 13 points each and Salma Rasheed (So., Walnut, Walnut HS) scored 12 points.
BRONCOS REMAIN FIRST IN REGIONAL POLL, SLIP TO THIRD NATIONALLY: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team remained atop the NCAA Division II West Region poll in the Feb. 6 rankings, although the Broncos did slip to third in the national ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Top 25 poll released on Feb. 5. Both teams ahead of the Broncos lost last week, leaving open the possibility that the Broncos will retake the No. 1 spot in Tuesday’s poll.
BRONCOS TO HOST TWO HUGE GAMES THIS WEEKEND: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team will try to avenge one of its three losses this weekend. The Broncos will host Chico State on Friday night at 6 p.m. and meet UC Davis, which beat Cal Poly Pomona, 72-70, on Jan. 4, on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
BRONCOS ENJOY BUSY WEEKEND: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team saw plenty of action last week, edging Mesa State (Colo.) on Friday and then splitting games with Mesa State and UC Davis on Saturday. The Broncos started with an exciting 2-1 victory over Mesa State on Friday afternoon. David Krisch (Sr., El Cajon, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) pitched eight outstanding innings for the Broncos and picked up the win to go to 2-0 on the season. He allowed seven hits and one run in his second straight impressive start. Ricky Wooten (So., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his second save of the season. The other star of the game was Matt Stevens (Fr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS), who drove in both Bronco runs, including the game-winner in the eighth inning. Stevens, the Broncos’ starting right-fielder, also threw out a Mesa State baserunner at the plate. Cal Poly Pomona had a season-low four hits, but still picked up the win. Cal Poly Pomona was back in action for its second game against Mesa State, this one starting at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. Once again, it was a well-played game and this time the Bronco dramatics took place in the ninth inning. With the game tied 3-3, Andy Gonzales (Fr., Whittier, California HS) singled in Matt Lopez (Fr., Lancaster, Quartz Hills HS) with the winning run. Lopez moved into scoring position thanks to a perfectly-placed sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Alexander (Sr., Covina, Citrus College). Benny Winslow (Jr., Tucson, Az., Cuesta College) went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored to pace a nine-hit Cal Poly Pomona attack. The Broncos trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, but a two-run double by Jason Marcus (Sr., San Dimas, Mt. SAC) tied the game. The Broncos didn’t have as much luck in their second game of the day on Saturday, a nine-inning non-conference matchup with CCAA rival UC Davis. The Aggies took advantage of seven Cal Poly Pomona errors and beat the Broncos, 16-8. The Broncos had a six-game unbeaten streak snapped. Jason Welch (Sr., Diamond Bar, Santa Ana JC) had three hits and two RBI for the Broncos, while Andy Gonzales had two hits and two RBI. Stevens, Victor Yoshisa (Jr., Encinitas, Palomar College) and Russell Espinosa (Jr., Sacramento, Cosumnes River CC) had two hits each for the Broncos.
BRONCOS TO OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY THIS WEEK: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team will open its CCAA schedule with a four-game series at Cal State L.A. beginning on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. The two teams will play a single game at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and then square off in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon. The Broncos, who finished fourth in the conference last season, are looking for their third straight CCAA postseason tournament appearance.
