MEN’S BASKETBALL: BRONCOS TAKE THE BROOMS TO ROADRUNNERS

2001-02 West Regional Ranking: 10 (1-23-02)

BRONCOS RECORD ANOTHER WIN OVER #22 CS BAKERSFIELD: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team recorded its first sweep over Cal State Bakersfield since 1981 with its 70-65 victory over the Roadrunners last Saturday night in Kellogg Gym. Earlier this season, the Broncos dropped the Roadrunners, 67-47, handing Cal State Bakersfield its most lopsided home defeat ever to an NCAA Division II team. Like they did in Bakersfield, the Broncos led for most of the game, although this contest was much more competitive. A slam dunk by Raymond Hubbard (Sr., Chicago, Cuyamaca CC) gave the Broncos a 12-11 lead with 12:41 left in the first half and the Broncos led the rest of the way. Cal Poly Pomona opened up leads as large as 11 points in the first half and still led by six, 34-28, at halftime. The Broncos held leads ranging between three points and 12 points in the second half. Cal Poly Pomona led, 62-50, with 3:32 left, and, although a late 3-pointer by Cal State Bakersfield trimmed the lead to 68-65 with 11 seconds left, the Roadrunners never had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead down the stretch. The sweep was the first for Cal Poly Pomona over Cal State Bakersfield since 1981. Hubbard, who was named the CCAA’s Player of the Week after a dominating performance against the Roadrunners in Bakersfield, was unstoppable again on Saturday, scoring a game-high 19 points to go along with three rebounds and two blocks. Jeff Bonds (Fr., Compton, Mayfair HS) scored 10 points and had four rebounds, while Lucas LeCour (Sr., Las Vegas, Las Vegas HS) had nine points, five assists and two steals. David Sybesma (Fr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) added eight points and eight rebounds, while Marques Montgomery (Sr., Cerritos, Valley Christian HS) had seven points and one steal. On Friday night, the Broncos posted an 86-57 victory over Cal State Stanislaus. After leading by seven points at halftime, 33-26, the Broncos shot a sizzling 63 percent in the second half while outscoring the Warriors, 53-31. LeCour led the Broncos with 18 points, four assists and four steals, while T.J. Williams (Sr., Dana Point, Santa Margarita HS) and Jonathan Williams (So., Pasadena, Muir HS) added nine points each. T.J. Williams also had five rebounds, while Jonathan Williams had five assists. The Broncos had tremendous balance with 13 players scoring points in the game.

BRONCOS SET FOR ANOTHER BIG WEEKEND: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team will face two tough road games this weekend as the Broncos remain in the hunt for their first NCAA postseason berth since 1976. The Broncos will meet Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 8 p.m. and then square off with Cal State L.A. on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Broncos remain in third place in the CCAA, one game behind second-place Cal State Bakersfield and three games back of first-place Cal State San Bernardino.

BRONCOS MOVE TO NINTH IN REGIONAL POLL: Cal Poly Pomona moved from 10th to ninth in the NCAA Division II West Region poll released on Jan. 30 after its two close losses to No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino. A new poll is due out this Wednesday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: #1 BRONCOS HAVE LENGTHY STREAK SNAPPED

2001-02 Overall Record: 16-3, CCAA Record: 12-2.

BRONCOS FALL AT HOME TO ROADRUNNERS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team had its 22-game home winning streak snapped Saturday night when the Broncos lost to Cal State Bakersfield, 92-86. The Broncos hadn’t lost at home since falling to Western Washington in the 2000 NCAA Division II West Regional. To make matters worse, Anna James (Jr., Orangevale, Casa Roble HS) suffered what appears to be a major knee injury in the second half and could be lost for the season. Cal Poly Pomona fell into a first-place tie with the Roadrunners after the loss. The women’s basketball team was honored after the game as one of the 12 national championship teams from Cal Poly Pomona during the “Night Of Champions” celebration. Lauri McIntosh (Sr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) scored 29 points to lead the Broncos, while Margot Richards (Sr., Orangevale, Erskine College) had a season-high 14 points. The Broncos trailed early, but a 15-4 run to close the first half, fueled by Salma Rasheed (So., Walnut, Walnut HS) gave them a 46-45 lead. Rasheed scored seven straight points in the final two minutes of the half and her layup gave the Broncos the halftime edge. The Broncos trailed, 53-52, when James, who scored 10 points, went down with the knee injury. Cal Poly Pomona was behind the rest of the way. On Friday, the Broncos defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 77-63, after jumping out to a big early lead and cruising from there. Eleven players scored in the contest for the Broncos, who led by as many as 21 points in the game. McIntosh led the Broncos with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Aprile Powell (So., Santa Ana, Century HS) added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Richards had 10 points. Heather Reeder (Jr., Wenatche, WA, University of Portland) had nine points, all in the first half, and three rebounds.

BRONCOS REMAIN FIRST IN NATIONAL, REGIONAL POLLS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team remained in first place in the NCAA Division II West Region in the Jan. 30 rankings and also held steady as the No. 1 team in the nation in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Top 25 poll released on Jan. 29. The loss to Cal State Bakersfield, though, figures to drop the Broncos from No. 1 in the national poll, which will be released on Tuesday.

BRONCOS TRY TO BOUNCE BACK ON THE ROAD: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team will try to rebound from Saturday’s loss and face a pair of challenging road contests. The Broncos will be at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 6 p.m. and will then tangle with Cal State L.A. on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

BASEBALL: BRONCOS’ OFFENSE IS ON A ROLL

2002 Overall Record: 3-1-1, 2002 CCAA Record: 0-0

BRONCO BATS ARE BOOMING: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team had an explosive week last week, pounding out 45 hits and 34 runs in three games against NAIA competition. The Broncos went 2-0-1 for the week. The Broncos began their adventure in La Mirada on Tuesday and beat Biola University, ranked eighth in the nation in the NAIA preseason poll, 10-1. Jason Marcus (Sr., San Dimas, Mt. SAC) had a three-run home run in the second inning and finished the game with four RBI. Matt Stevens (Fr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) and Jose Munoz (Jr., Baldwin Park, Rio Hondo JC) had three hits each for the Broncos. Kevin Waldinger (Sr., Yorba Linda, Fullerton JC) allowed only one run in five innings to pick up the win. Cal Poly Pomona then beat Concordia, 10-8, on Wednesday at Scolinos Field. Jason Welch (Sr., Diamond Bar, Santa Ana JC) drove in five runs to lead a 10-hit attack. Marcus drove in three more runs for the Broncos, who overcame an early 5-2 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the second. Munoz pitched five strong innings of relief – allowing only two runs – to pick up the victory for the Broncos, while Ricky Wooten (So., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) got the final five outs to pick up his first save of the season. In their final game of the week, the Broncos had to settle for a 14-14 tie with Biola at Scolinos Field in a wild game. Biola struck for six runs in its half of the first, only to see the Broncos bounce back with five in the bottom of the inning. Cal Poly Pomona tied the game at 12-12 with a four-run rally in the seventh inning. Brian Ziarnick (Jr., Chino, Fullerton CC) singled in two runs and Anthony Gonzales (Jr., Whittier, Santa Ana JC)  doubled in a pair to even things up. The Broncos then needed two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the contest again. Stevens’ run-scoring single got the Broncos even, but they had a runner thrown out at third base for the final out. The game was called after nine inning by darkness. Wooten pitched a scoreless ninth inning and struck out two for the Broncos.
