Broncos Post Impressive Tourney Victory

 

McIntosh leads Broncos to big 85-65 win over Western Washington

 

POMONA¾  The CCAA/GNAC Classic turned into a showcase for defending national champion Cal Poly Pomona.

      The Broncos, one night after beating No. 8 Seattle Pacific, turned in a dominating performance Saturday night with an 85-65 win over No. 18 Western Washington in the tournament finale in Kellogg Gym. Cal Poly Pomona (8-1), ranked third in the nation, won its sixth straight game.

      Cal Poly Pomona senior forward Lauri McIntosh earned tournament Most Outstanding Player honors after following up her 30-point effort against Seattle Pacific with a 25-point outing against Western Washington. Teammate Burgundie Porter joined her on the all-tournament team which also included Jurate Orinaite of Cal State L.A., Michelle Beaumont of Seattle Pacific and Jenn McGillivray of Western Washington.

      In the early game Saturday, Seattle Pacific edged Cal State L.A., 63-60.

      The Broncos took command of the game against Western Washington (8-2) early. Cal Poly Pomona trailed only once, 5-4, and built leads as large as 15 in the first half before settling for a 44-31 halftime advantage. The Broncos blew the game wide open in the second half, leading by as many as 30 points.

      McIntosh hit nine of her 15 field-goal attempts and was perfect in seven attempts at the free-throw line. The Broncos had plenty of firepower in Saturday’s win and 11 players scored in the game.

      Senior guard Leah Whatley had 12 points and three assists, while Aprile Powell, in her second appearance since missing six games after undergoing knee surgery, also had 12 points with three rebounds.

      Porter, who was one of the heroes in Friday’s win, added eight points and grabbed four rebounds.

      Megan Quarterman led the Vikings with 16 points, while Susan Rodgers had 15 points and eight rebounds.
