Villaroman, Feliz Lead Way At Davis

Cal Poly Pomona players advance in ITA West Regional Tourney

DAVIS¾ J.R. Villaroman and Dehlia Feliz turned in the top performances for Cal Poly Pomona’s tennis teams Thursday at the ITA West Region Tennis Championships hosted by UC Davis.

Villaroman (Sr., Anaheim, Troy HS) advanced to the men’s singles quarterfinals with victories Thursday over Jeff Miller of Cal State L.A., 6-1, 6-1 and Richard Galang of UC Davis, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Villaroman will face third-seeded Greg Lee of UC Davis this morning.

Feliz (Fr., San Gabriel, San Gabriel HS) won her first two matches Thursday, beating Lisa Duncan of Cal State San Bernardino, 6-0, 6-0 and Luna Tieu of UC Davis, 6-3, 6-1.

The six other Cal Poly Pomona singles players bowed out in competition Thursday. Seamus Sullivan was ousted in a tough three-set match by Joey Proietti of UC Davis, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, James Wessell was beaten in three sets by Greg Ford of UC Davis, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 and Kevin Chen was beaten by Sameer Chopra of UC San Diego, 6-4, 6-1.

In other women’s singles matches, Lisa Jones beat Julie Fisher of Sonoma State, 7-5, 6-4, before losing to Britni Webb of UC Davis, 6-2, 6-0. Priscilla DeVera beat Karen Cervantez of Grand Canyon, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to Katie McCain of Sonoma State, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

In doubles, the men’s team of Villaroman-Sullivan have advanced to the quarterfinals after an 8-6 win over Henning Heinz-Robert Hallberg of Cal State L.A.
