BRONCOS
PUT UP A FIGHT AGAIN NO. 1 COYOTES: Cal
Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team dropped a pair of games last week, but the
Broncos were impressive in both defeats against the No. 1 team in the nation,
Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos hosted the Coyotes on Wednesday and lost
a 66-63 thriller. Cal Poly Pomona fell behind 22-6 in the first 10 minutes of
the game, but fought back to trail by just two points, 30-28, at halftime. The
second-half turned into one of the most exciting stretches of basketball this
season. The highlight was a personal duel between Cal Poly Pomona’s Lucas LeCour (Sr., Las Vegas, Las Vegas HS) and Cal State San Bernardino’s Lance Ray,
who traded multiple 3-pointers during a span of about two-and-a-half minutes.
LeCour hit a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws, while Ray scored all 11 of
his points on three 3-pointers and a layup following a steal. The Broncos never
trailed by more than seven points in the second half and took a 63-62 lead on a
pair of free throws by Jeff Bonds (Fr., Compton, Mayfair HS) with 45 seconds
left. The Coyotes, though, scored the final four points and survived a
brilliant fake by Marques
Montgomery (Sr., Cerritos, Valley
Christian HS), who eluded a Cal State San Bernardino defender and got off a
potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer that just missed. LeCour had a
season-high 24 points, while Montgomery had a career-high 16 points and did a
magnificent defensive job against the CCAA’s Player of the Year last season,
Bobby Burries, holding him to just seven points. The teams met again on
Saturday in San Bernardino and the Coyotes packed an announced crowd of 4,297
into Coussoulis Arena for its “Break The Record” night. The Coyotes did indeed
break their record and then survived another major upset bid by the Broncos.
Once again, the Broncos trailed by just two points, 28-26, at halftime. Cal
State San Bernardino scored the first eight points of the second half and moved
out to a 12-point lead, 48-36, with 10:46 to go. Cal Poly Pomona, though, went
on an 11-0 run of its own to close the game to 48-47 with 6:05 left. That was
as close as the Broncos would get, though, as missed free throws became a major
factor. Cal Poly Pomona missed 12 of its 24 free-throw attempts in the second
half. Bonds led the Broncos with 11 points, while Raymond Hubbard (Sr.,
Chicago, Cuyamaca CC) had eight points and three rebounds. David Sybesma (Fr., Corona, Corona Centennial) had seven points, three rebounds and
three steals, while Montgomery had seven points, three rebounds and two steals
and once again limited Burries to just seven points.

BRONCOS REMAIN 10th IN REGIONAL POLL: Cal Poly Pomona slipped from ninth to 10th after splitting its games at UC San Diego and Grand Canyon in the regional poll released on Jan. 23. Cal State San Bernardino is first, while Cal State Bakersfield, the team the Broncos host on Saturday, is ranked fifth. A new poll will be released this Wednesday and will be released each Wednesday until the end of the regular season.

BRONCOS BUMP WINNING STREAK TO SEVEN: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team stretched its winning streak to a season-best seven games with a pair of victories over Cal State San Bernardino last week. The Broncos ran their home winning streak to 21 with an 86-44 victory over the Coyotes on Wednesday in Kellogg Gym. Five players scored in double figures to lead the Broncos, who held their opponent to a season-low 44 points. Aprile Powell (So., Santa Ana, Century HS) scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the way, while Burgundie Porter (Sr., San Dimas, San Dimas HS) added 13 points and five assists. Leah Whatley (Sr., Suisun, Tartleton State), Salma Rasheed (So, Walnut, Walnut HS) and Heather Reeder (Jr., Wenatche, WA, University of Portland) scored 10 points each. The Broncos recorded 21 steals, including a career-high seven by Powell. The Broncos trailed 12-7 early, but went on a 36-7 run to break the game open. The Broncos led 44-22 at halftime and were never threatened. Cal Poly Pomona had more of a battle on its hands in Saturday’s game at San Bernardino. The game was tied at halftime, 44-44 and the Broncos led just 71-67 with 9:16 left. Cal Poly Pomona, though, went on a quick 8-1 run to take a 79-68 advantage and never led by less than 10 points again. Lauri McIntosh (Sr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) scored a team-high 27 points to lead the Broncos, while Powell had 23 points and 16 rebounds. Reeder added 13 points and set a new season high in scoring for the second straight game. Whatley had eight points, four rebounds and three assists, while Porter had six points, five assists and three rebounds.
BRONCOS REMAIN FIRST IN NATIONAL, REGIONAL POLLS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team remained in first place in the NCAA Division II West Region in the Jan. 23 rankings and also held steady as the No. 1 team in the nation in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Top 25 poll.
MCINTOSH IS THIRD IN THE NATION IN SCORING: Lauri McIntosh, a Player of the Year candidate, is now second in the NCAA Division II in scoring with a 23.2 points per game average. McIntosh is also second in the CCAA and leads the conference in field-goal percentage.

BRONCOS SPLIT TWO GAMES WITH AZUSA PACIFIC: After dropping its season opener in Azusa last Thursday, Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday in the home opener at Scolinos Field. The Broncos knocked out 19 hits and beat Azusa Pacific, 15-7, posting their first win over the Cougars since the 1998 season. Azusa Pacific had won eight straight games against the Broncos. David Krisch (Sr., El Cajon, Cal Poly SLO) pitched five strong innings in his Cal Poly Pomona debut to record the win. He allowed six hits and one run and got plenty of offensive support. The Broncos, after trailing 1-0 through one inning, erupted for six runs in the second inning and four more in the third. All nine Cal Poly Pomona starters and 10 players in all recorded hits for the Broncos. Andy Gonzales (Fr., Whittier, California HS) had three hits and four RBI in his first start for the Broncos, while Brian Ziarnick (Jr., Chino, Fullerton CC), Nicholas Sloey (Jr., Redondo Beach, Redondo Union HS) and Matt Lopez (Fr., Lancaster, Quartz Hill HS) drove in three runs each. Lopez belted a two-run home run to highlight his day, while Sloey tied a single-game Cal Poly Pomona record with three doubles. Sloey was 3-5 with three runs and three RBI. Eric Hing (Sr., La Canada, La Canada HS) and Chris Sotro (So., Upland, Upland HS) each pitched a scoreless inning to lead the Cal Poly Pomona bullpen. The Broncos opened the 2002 season with an 8-5 loss at Azusa Pacific. The Broncos fell behind 7-0 after one inning and couldn’t recover. Cal Poly Pomona did rally, though, and had the tying runs on base in the eighth inning. Jason Marcus (Sr., San Dimas, Mt. SAC) got his season off to a smashing start, belting a pair of solo home runs to lead a nine-hit attack. Matt Stevens (Fr., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) and Tim Thurman (Jr., Lake Forest, Cal Poly SLO) had two hits each for the Broncos. Thurman also had a pair of RBI. Ricky Wooten (So., Riverside, Rubidoux HS) pitched four strong innings of relief, allowing only four hits and one run, to give the Broncos a chance to rally.
