BRONCOS REMAIN UNBEATEN IN KELLOGG GYM: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team upped its record at home this season to 6-0 with victories last week over San Francisco State and Sonoma State. The Broncos are now 8-2 in CCAA play for the second straight season and headed for a showdown this Wednesday night with Cal State San Bernardino, the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. The Broncos started the weekend with a 69-44 victory over San Francisco State on Friday. Cal Poly Pomona’s defense was in fine form as the Broncos allowed a season-low 44 points. The previous low was 47 points to Cal State Bakersfield. Cal Poly Pomona led at halftime, 29-17, and then broke the game wide open in the second half. Forward David Sybesma (Fr., Corona, Corona Centennial HS) led the team in scoring for the first time this season with 13 points, while Jeff Bonds (Fr., Compton, Mayfair HS) and Jonathan Williams (So., Pasadena, Muir HS) scored 10 points each. The Broncos were an impressive 7-of-15 from behind the 3-point arc and seven different players connected on 3-point shots. Sybesma, Williams, Lucas LeCour (Sr., Las Vegas, Las Vegas HS), Marques Montgomery (Sr., Cerritos, Valley Christian HS), T.J. Williams (Sr., Dana Point, Santa Margarita HS), Andy Bratt (So., Tucson, Ariz., Salpointe HS), and Yousef Etemadi (Jr., Laguna Niguel, Saddleback College) all hit long-range attempts for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona prevailed over Sonoma State the following night, although it was a much bigger struggle. The Broncos missed all nine of their 3-point attempts and shot just 34.7 percent from the floor. The Bronco defense, though, put the clamps on an opponent for the second straight evening. The Broncos forced 24 turnovers and limited the Cossacks to just 18 first-half points. Raymond Hubbard (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Cuyamaca College) poured in a career-high 22 points and also grabbed seven rebounds to pace the Broncos. Bonds scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the Broncos. It marked the 12th straight time Bonds has reached double figures for the Broncos.

BRONCOS POST DOUBLE-DIGIT VICTORIES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team stretched its home winning streak to 20 in a row with a pair of wins last weekend over San Francisco State and Sonoma State. The Broncos had NCAA Division II Player of the Year candidate Lauri McIntosh (Sr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) back in the lineup, but Anna James (Jr., Orangevale, Casa Roble HS) was out of the starting lineup while battling illness. Only one Cal Poly Pomona player, Leah Whatley (Sr., Suisun, Tartleton State), has started all 15 games for the defending national champs this season. The Broncos began the weekend with a 78-62 victory over San Francisco State on Friday. Cal Poly Pomona started quickly and opened up a 41-17 lead in the first half. The Broncos, though, had to weather a serious San Francisco State charge that cut the lead to six points in the second half. The Broncos were able to pull away again down the stretch and record a 16-point win. McIntosh scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to lead the way. Aprile Powell (So., Santa Ana, Century HS) added 13 points and four rebounds, while James and Burgundie Porter (Sr., San Dimas, San Dimas HS) scored nine points each. The Broncos had another solid performance on Saturday night, beating Sonoma State, which was the fourth-ranked team in the West Region, 78-69. Once again, the Broncos jumped out quickly, scoring the first eight points of the game, all by McIntosh. Cal Poly Pomona trailed 17-14, but a 3-pointer by Powell tied the game, two free throws by Salma Rasheed (So., Walnut, Walnut HS) gave the Broncos a 19-17 lead and they never trailed again. The Broncos led by as many as 15 points in the first half before settling for a 46-40 halftime lead. Sonoma State got to within four points twice in the second half, the final time at 67-63 with 7:37 left. A 3-pointer by James stopped the run and the Broncos closed the game strongly. Powell had 19 points and four rebounds to lead the Broncos, while James had 17 points. McIntosh had 15 points and six rebounds, while Rasheed finished with 13 points. Cal Poly Pomona was 8-of-16 from behind the 3-point arc, including three 3-pointesr  by James and two from Whatley.
