BRONCOS
POST BIG WIN OVER CHICO STATE: Cal
Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team rebounded from a tough loss to a
hot-shooting UC Davis team on Friday night with an impressive 81-71 victory
over Chico State on Saturday night. Lucas
LeCour (Sr., Las Vegas, Las Vegas
HS) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Broncos in the victory, while David Sybesma (Fr., Riverside, Corona Centennial HS) chipped in with a season-high 16
points. Raymond Hubbard (Sr., Chicago, Cuyamaca CC) had 11 points
and eight rebounds, while Jeff
Bonds (Fr., Compton, Mayfair HS)
added 10 points and three rebounds. Cal Poly Pomona got big production from its
bench in the victory. The Broncos’ reserves scored 49 of the team’s 81
points. The Broncos led for most of the
game and had leads as large as 14 points in the first half. Cal Poly Pomona
settled for a six-point lead, 44-38, at halftime and built the advantage back
up to 10 points midway through the second half. Chico State narrowed the lead
to five points with 1:21 to go, but LeCour hit a pair of free throws to push
the lead back to seven points and the Broncos led by at least six points the
rest of the way. The victory kept the Broncos in second place in the CCAA,
one-game behind conference-leading Cal State San Bernardino. The win was
especially important because the Broncos suffered their first conference defeat
the night before at UC Davis, 82-74. The Aggies shot a sizzling 60.9 percent
from the floor and also made seven of nine 3-point attempts. The Broncos,
meanwhile, shot a respectable 48 percent from the floor, but made only 1 of 14
from behind the 3-point line. Bonds had a season-high 23 points in the loss,
while LeCour and Hubbard added 13 points each. LeCour also had a season-high
eight assists. Cal Poly Pomona fought back from an early nine-point deficit to
take a 21-20 lead and led by one point on three different occasions. UC Davis,
though, scored the final five points of the first half to take a 37-33 halftime
score and then opened up a 17-point lead midway through the second half.
BRONCOS CONTINUE CCAA PLAY WITH TWO MORE ROAD GAMES THIS WEEKEND: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team will complete a stretch of nine road games in its first 13 contests when the Broncos face UC San Diego in La Jolla on Friday, Jan. 11, at 7:30 p.m. and meet Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. The Broncos are alone in second place in the conference with a 5-1 mark, while Grand Canyon is 2-4 in conference and 4-7 overall and UC San Diego is 1-5 in conference and 4-9 overall.
2001 Overall Record: 9-2, CCAA Record: 5-1.

BRONCOS REBOUND NICELY FROM RARE CONFERENCE LOSS: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team suffered its first CCAA loss of the season on Friday, Jan. 4, in Davis, but bounced back with a significant victory in Chico the following night. Five players reached double figures and the Broncos rolled past the Wildcats, 92-83, winning at Chico State for the first time since a 77-73 victory on Dec. 12, 1991. Lauri McIntosh (Sr., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) scored a game-high 29 points to lead the way as she continued her torrid scoring pace. McIntosh is leading the CCAA with a 25.4 points per game average. Guard Anna James (Jr., Orangevale, Casa Robles HS) hit her first six shots of the game – including four 3-pointers – while scoring 16 of her 20 points in the first half. Leah Whatley (Sr., Suisun, Tarleton State) had 15 points, Burgundie Porter (Sr., San Dimas, San Dimas HS) added 12 points and Salma Rasheed (So., Walnut, Walnut HS) had 12 points and four rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench. For seniors McIntosh, Porter and Kim Kennedy (Sr., Walnut Creek, Carondelet HS), the win was especially satisfying. The Broncos had been 0-3 in Chico in their first three years with the program. Cal Poly Pomona was an amazing 11-of-17 from behind the 3-point line and shot 57 percent for the game. The Broncos led from start to finish and took control of the game early in the first half. The Broncos led, 49-35, at halftime and led by as many as 19 points in the second half. Cal Poly Pomona never led by less than eight points in the second half. The results weren’t nearly as bright the evening before when the Broncos fell at UC Davis, 72-70. Cal Poly Pomona started the game sluggishly and lost for only the fourth time in 47 conference games. The Broncos found themselves in trouble early and fell behind by as many as 11 points. The Broncos managed to cut the deficit to seven points, 38-31, by halftime, but dropped behind by 11 points again in the second half, 53-42, before rallying. Cal Poly Pomona went on a 15-3 run to take its first lead of the game on a basket by McIntosh with 7:44 remaining. The Broncos’ last lead, 68-67, came on two free throws by Marisa Lattin (So., Oceanside, El Camino HS) with 3:11 to go. The Broncos had a shot at sending the game into overtime, but a shot by McIntosh just missed and the battle for the rebound ended with the ball rolling out of bounds at the buzzer. Porter led the Broncos with 13 points, while Lattin had 12. McIntosh added 11 points.
BRONCOS MOVE TO FIRST IN WEST REGION: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team moved into first in the NCAA Division II West Region after its two wins over Seattle Pacific and Western Washington in the CCAA/GNAC Classic. Cal Poly Pomona was first, Sonoma State was second, Montana State-Billings was third and Chico State was fourth in the poll, which was released on Jan. 2. A new poll will be released this Wednesday. Cal Poly Pomona was third in the latest national poll. A new national poll will also be released later this week.
BRONCOS READY FOR ANOTHER ROAD TRIP: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team, which is 44-4 in its last 48 CCAA games, will be on the road again this week. The Broncos, 5-1 in the conference so far this season, will be at UC San Diego on Friday, Jan. 11 at 5:30 p.m. The Tritons are 2-4 in conference and 6-5 overall. The Broncos will then face Grand Canyon on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m. The Antelopes are 0-6 in conference and 2-9 overall.
