Combining excellence in athletics and academics, Cal Poly Pomona stands as one of the top programs in the nation. Competing at the NCAA Division II level, the Broncos sponsor 12 intercollegiate sports including baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track and field and women's volleyball.

With the Bronco women's basketball team winning the 2001 and 2002 NCAA Division II National Championships, Cal Poly Pomona has captured 13 national team titles. Women's basketball (1982, 1985, 1986, 2001, 2002) has won five national titles, women's tennis (1980, 1981, 1991 and 1992) has won four national titles, while baseball (1976, 1980 and 1983) and men's cross country (1983) round out the championships.

Cal Poly Pomona has had 25 individual national champions in the sports of men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track & field. For all sports, the Broncos have had 16 student-athletes receive national award honors, including "Player of the Year", "Rookie of the Year", "Senior of the Year" and the "Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award". Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes have won 349 All-America awards in the program's history.

The Cal Poly Pomona coaching staff has been well-respected among its peers with 11 "National Coach of the Year" honors. The dean of the head coaching staff is Jim Sackett who is a three-time "National Coach of the Year" (cross country, track & field). He was also recently named the 2003 CCAA Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. Head women's basketball coach Paul Thomas was named the National Coach of the Year in 2002.

Cal Poly Pomona is a full-time member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. In its 65th year, the CCAA is the most established and successful NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The CCAA leads the nation in national championship team titles with 145. During the 2003-04 season, the CCAA had picked up its most recent national title: Cal State Bakersfield in men's swimming and diving.

In the CCAA, the Broncos have won 48 conference titles and numerous coach and player of the year awards. Sandy Kriezel was named the 2002 CCAA Coach of the Year in women's tennis and Sackett was just honored in men's cross country. Bronco student-athletes have been honored with four "Male Athlete of the Year" awards, while the women have earned six "Female Athlete of the Year" honors, including three straight seasons (1998-2000).

Each year, student-athletes face many challenges during the school year. Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes are not only successful in competition, they take pride in their accomplishments in the classroom. Overall, the student-athletes maintain a higher GPA and graduation rate than the general student body.

The department has been honored over the past 10 years with four President Scholars. Most recently, Angela Modin was named the College of Environmental Design's "James H. Jones President's Council Scholar" for the 2000-2001 academic year. The President's Council Scholars program was established in 1983 to recognize the academic and co-curricular excellence of a select group of students.

During the 2002-03 academic year, the Department of Athletics was presented with an NCAA Division II-USA Today award for finishing in the Top Ten for Division II in the category of highest student-athlete graduation rate improvement. In 2003-04, Cal Poly Pomona honored 34 of its student-athletes as "Academic All-Stars" for maintaining a 3.2 grade point average.
