Template Depot

Tired of reinventing the wheel? Try a template from the Web Team Template Depot. These templates are designed to be used with Macromedia Dreamweaver, and are compatible with Macromedia Contribute, but experienced webwrights can easily use them for hand-coding. Each template is valid HTML 4.01 Transitional, with valid CSS, and is Section 508 compliant. Each has been tested on multiple browsers and platforms, and is designed to "provide content to every user agent": all browsers will be able to display your page (users of version 4 and earlier browsers will see the full content, without styles.

The templates

At this time, only a single set of templates is available, but it is the one most asked for. By simply adding your 750px × 77px banner graphic and adjusting the navigation, your pages will take on the look and feel of the Cal Poly Pomona main web pages.

Use

Each set of templates contains the following:

  • a Templates folder with Dreamweaver .dwt files
  • a css folder with cascading style sheets
  • an img folder with the images used by the templates
  • an example folder with viewable examples of each page type

All these items are also provided in a .zip archive. For use in Dreamweaver, expand the archive (keeping its directory structure) into the folder that houses your local Dreamweaver site.

Modification

Finished web pages made from these templates are designed for modification even by inexperienced users, either with Contribute or with Dreamweaver. The appearance of headings, paragraphs, and lists is already established, so that users will have no need of using font tags or CSS classes.

However, there are no user-serviceable parts inside the template. Modification of the banner graphic, the main navigation menu, and the footer are expected, and may be accomplished by anyone with web experience. Modification of the other portions, especially the style sheets, should only be attempted by those with experience in CSS or the desire to "learn by doing".
