In the absence of Chairman Schelvan, the meeting was chaired by Professor Rosenkrantz

Introductions: Members introduced themselves.

• Dean's Remarks: Before the regular meeting started the Dean made a few remarks. With regard to the new building, the construction fence is scheduled to be erected on November 19th! Contracts have been let for demolishing the old buildings and the RFP is out for bid for the new building construction. The bureaucracy moves slowly. With regard to the IME Department, Dean Hohmann noted that this is an outstanding department, very forward looking in every way-- especially in its use of the WEB, both administratively and pedagogically.

• Engineering Building Noted that bids were awarded and out, as the Dean had said, however, fund raising is still a very active part of the program and must continue to pursued. Foundry upgrade is also underway. Working with Citation in that regard. Department is actively pursuing an SME grant for a plastics program working with Cerritos College. A new CNC machine has been acquired for one of the labs in the new building, however, assistance is needed to acquire tooling. The machine was funded in part by the department from funds raised through the Taguchi Center and from the IAC and from a grant from the President.
  
• Academic Programs The department is heavily involved in preparation for the scheduled ABET accreditation visit. The change in the accreditation procedure-assessment vs. accounting was explained. Only a very few colleges have undergone accreditation under the new procedure, and they have had problems with it. The IME department is using Quality Function Deployment as means of assessment in preparing for the visit. This will be the first time this has been used for this purpose. Other than reaccreditation, the use of QFD in this way may be used for some papers and perhaps some grant proposals. Don Zook who is an ABET visitor noted that this procedure-use of QFD-will be unique to ABET.
  
• Senior Project Course - The Senior Project sequence IME 461,462 has been modified as a result of input from the IAC and from the results of a survey of the employers of our students. It was noted by both sources that students need improvement in presentation skills. Therefore, all Senior Projects are now formally presented to an audience of faculty, industry and students who hear the presentation and question the presenter. The presentation room and presentation equipment are available for student practice. This procedure is improving the presentation skills of our students.
  
• Discussed the Ambassador Recruiting Program - A handout describing the program was distributed (copy attached.)
  
• Engineering Colloquium. This program will continue for its 4th year. The theme this year is "The Effective Engineer." A handout describing the program was distributed and full details are available on the web.
  
• Western Taguchi Center and Continuing Education - Fliers are attached noticing the upcoming Taguchi conference. The department is continuing to work with Continuing Education in preparing certificate programs in special topics.
  
• Long Range Plans - The IME Department is considering long range plans. As a part of this process it is asking, "Where should the department be in five years?" The IAC will be asked to assist in this effort.
  
• New Faculty Member - A recent addition to the IME faculty, Dr. Victor Okhuysen, was noted. Dr. Okhuysen has his Ph.D from Penn State and his undergraduate engineering degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He is an Investment casting specialist and fluent in Spanish as well as English.

Diane James from the Dean's office noted that there will be a Vendor's Day on campus February 25th. Noted also that a full-time career center has been opened on campus.

Meeting adjourned at 9:30 a.m. followed by an optional tour of the interim facilities.
