In the absence of Chairman Schelvan, the meeting was chaired by Professor
Rosenkrantz.
1. Introductions: New members were introduced; Gavin George from
UPS, Wally Hall, retired, and Dr. Jack ReVelle a member of
the original council, returning after a long absence (Jack retired from
Hughes, Tucson and now works for Gencorp Aerojet). After the introduction
of new members, other members introduced themselves.
2. Department Report (Rosenkrantz)
Engineering Building
- A new engineering brochure was distributed. It will be used in the capital
campaign for equipping the new building. The move-in date for the new building
is now the Fall of 2000.
Academic Programs
- The department is pursuing further options in Manufacturing Engineering.
This effort is funded by SME. The options are being developed through the
use of QFD. The possibility of a Certificate in Manufacturing Engineering
is being pursued as is the possibiltiy of an accredited program in Quality
Engineering. It was noted that Quality courses are presently available
on the WEB.
Student/Faculty Recruiting
- Faculty: There is a faculty search underway. Hopefully a new member may
be hired by the beginning of Fall Quarter. Students: Students recruiting
has concentrated on identifying the source(s) of our students and concentrating
on that source. Four IAC members met with Prof. Rosenkrantz for a lunch
in April to discuss setting up a student recruiting program. Two ideas
were identified as having the most potential: An "Ambassador Program"
and an intern program for new students.
The Ambassador Program for student recruiting was
explained. A list of the feeder high schools and feeder community colleges
was distributed and discussed. The possibility of internships for entering
students was discussed. This would be an excellent tool for acquainting
new students with their field and also as a source of income for them.
More work needs to be done to provide the infrastructure for both programs.
Engineering Colloquium
- The Colloquium speaker series was offered and well received during the
Winter Quarter. Presentations from the guest speakers were developed into
web pages and can be accessed at:

The results are being critically analyzed prior to
offering another colloquium during the Winter Quarter 99.
Western Taguchi Center
- the seminars held last week were a professional success. A brochure for
a seminar offered by the Center in the Fall of 98 was distributed. Companies
are encouraged to become sponsors for the event.
End-of-Year Banquet - One of the most successful to date. Professor Matulich was honored for his effort with AFS.
3. ABET - ABET is changing its accreditation method from resource
review to outcomes assessment. The department is utilizing QFD in its approach
to preparing for the accreditation visit. The process which the department
has employed to date was explained. It was noted that the department needs
input from the Council in this process. A form labelled "Voice of the
Customer Survey" was distributed for members to complete. Copies are
included with these minutes for absent members to complete. It is critically
important that you complete the Survey and return it to the department as
soon as possible. It will be part of the back ground information for
our ABET visit.
4. Engineering Interdisciplinary Clinic - The EIC Program was explained
by Chris Caenepeel (brochure inclosed with minutes).
