Ralph Westfall's End-User Computing Research

The following item relates to end-user computing. It was my first academic publication, three years before I completed my doctorate.

Westfall, R. D. (1993) "Social Integration as a Tool for Managing End User Computing and Decentralized Information Technology," Fourth Annual Conference Proceedings, C. E. T. Rohm, Jr. (ed.), San Bernardino, CA: International Information Management Association, pp. 1-9.
Based on a survey of previous research and theoretical considerations, this paper outlines a five-stage strategy for increasing the effectiveness of personnel engaged in end-user computing.

Other End-User Computing Research

Edberg, D. T. and B. J. Bowman

(1996) "User-Developed Applications: An Empirical Study of Application Quality and Developer Productivity," Journal of Management Information Systems (13)1, pp. 167-185.
This paper is quite relevant to managers who satisfy some of their system development requirements via end-user computing. The paper finds that undergraduate CIS majors (representing IS professionals) produced systems that were substantially better (as indicated by objective measures) than systems developed by MBAs (representing end-user computing).
