Troubled Teens Introducted to University Life

Naturally Sweet

Hitting the Right Note

A Great View

It has been just a few weeks since I formally took on this new role as university president, and what a great experience it has been so far. In my brief tenure at Cal Poly Pomona, I have already developed a deep respect and affinity for the traditions, academic excellence and beauty of this campus and the surrounding areas.

It is only appropriate that one of my first formal messages should be in Panorama, our community publication. Throughout my career in higher education, I have always placed a high value on a university’s relationship with its neighbors. A large regional university like Cal Poly Pomona has a responsibility to all the communities it serves, which goes beyond the basic academic mission. Cal Poly Pomona needs to be a resource, a partner and a friend.
Together, let’s identify ways in which we can collaborate. The current state of the California economy is having a terrible effect on all levels of education, but it is education that will spearhead our economic rebirth. It remains the one variable that consistently makes a difference in the lives of Californians.

Thank you for allowing us to come into your home with Panorama. I hope you enjoy this edition and look forward to meeting you in the near future.

Sincerely,
J. Michael Ortiz
