Traditional
and Adaptable

Each
fall, the start of the academic year brings with it a rush of memories.
Generations of students have experienced the thrill of new beginnings,
at the same time providing those of us who are part of it a renewed
sense of commitment as well as comfort in a return to the familiar.
Although Cal Poly Pomona may not be the oldest institution of higher
education in the region, it has its fair share of honored traditions.
From the establishment of the W.K. Kellogg Ranch and the Arabian
herd on what today is our campus to the first student Rose Parade
float entry and the "learn by doing" philosophy that remains its
educational foundation, traditions have sculpted this university
into a respected resource of learning.
Yet
while the university is traditional, it is also adaptable, a place
where innovation and advancement are valued components of the instructional
process. It is where faculty members can offer students not just
lessons in theory but also the first-hand experience in service
learning. Such are the traditions Cal Poly Pomona is known for and
that members of the campus community are most proud of.
I
hope that Panorama, now in its third year of publication, has become
a favorite tradition with you, the readers. Its goal is to provide
the information you need to make the most of the opportunities this
university offers while creating a bond between your family and
ours. We invite your feedback and welcome both your comments and
suggestions for future issues.
