MEP sponsors and advises in conjunction with the College of Engineering and Associated Students Inc. two student organizations: the National Society of Black Engineers ( NSBE ) and Society of Hispanics in Science and Engineering (SHSE) .
NSBE's mission is "to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community."
SHSE facilitates the programming of activities for the enrichment of the social, cultural, and educational aspects of university life. SHSE provides the development and training of mature and responsible leaders and instills within its members professional skills and attitudes. SHSE provides outreach programs for the improvement of the community as well as the promotion of higher education to local schools.
SHSE was awarded Chapter of the Year at the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers National Conference in Fall 2007. SHSE received the Regional Chapter of the Year Award, as well.
Work is ongoing to sponsor an American Indian Science and Engineering Society .
