The goals of the project are to have a sustained regional impact on the recruitment, preparation and retention of mathematics and science teachers and on classroom practices and student performance.  The MaSTER2 (Math and Science Teacher Education, Recruitment and Retention) project and its partnership will serve as an innovative pipeline to professional certification and teacher and student persistence in mathematics and science.  Objective will include preparing teachers to meet the No Child Left Behind highly qualified teacher requirements and:
  • recruiting a diverse group of mathematics and science teacher candidates from among individuals with strong mathematics and science backgrounds
  • training these candidates as new mathematics and science teachers through a linked program of undergraduate education, professional certification, and two years of induction
  • assisting current teachers in achieving certification through alternative and innovative methods, including technology-based strategies, that strengthen their academic content knowledge, classroom practices and the dispositions for engaging in mathematics and science
  • increasing the achievement of students in the region, including English learners, in middle and high school mathematics and science, and improve their disposition for engaging in these subjects, and to provide rigorous, coherent mathematics and science instruction
  • improving the quality of preparation and the retention of new teachers through induction programs aligned with the California Academic Content Standards and the California Standards for the Teaching Profession
  • institutionalizing a sustainable regional infrastructure for the continued preparation of large numbers of outstanding mathematics and science teachers to address the needs of the southern California region
