* Ask a CPP faculty member in the department (preferably an instructor from whom you took the course(s) you would like to tutor) who can provide a recommendation for you. Ask this person to complete the linked recommendation form to cgriffith@csupomona.edu.
* All Tutors are required to attend a two day training session September 18th & 19th, Fall 2007, before classes begin AND to enroll in either Sci 400 or SME 501, for specialized training leading to CRLA certification.
What are we looking for? Tutors are chosen for their ability to communicate and desire to help, as well as promptness, dependability, and command of the subject matter. Tutors employed in the MaSH Center must have a "B" average or higher in the subject tutored. The program is certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), an international organization of learning professionals. Tutors receive CRLA certification by successfully completing the MaSH tutor training module and complete 25 hours of paid tutoring. All tutors must enroll in Sci 400 each quarter for the first year of tutoring in the MaSH program.
In order to be successful as a tutor, candidates must be well grounded in the subject area to be facilitated. They must also be able to communicate effectively and excel in community building with their students . Candidates with better academic records can be passed over in favor of others who are more aware of and empathetic with student needs. Selection and training of tutors is an important part of the program.
